Terrific place very close to the beach

We (my family and some friends) enjoyed this cottage Aug/09. Brian was very helpful and made sure that everything was OK. We found the cottage to be better then we expected with plenty of room for all.

The cottage is really a few blocks away from the beach, a short 5 min walk. The beach is the best I have seen in Canada. Loads of things to do around the cottage.

We enjoed the cottage and plan on returning in the coming years.

Poor customer service

I rented this property in August 2008 and left it "in the condition in which it was received" and did not have my security deposit returned to me. As a result I will not rent through the internet again. I would not recommend this property, as the owner has treated us most unfairly.
I do not expect this review will be posted, though I feel that whoever is Webmaster of this site should be made aware of this. Sadly it has been a very, very negative experience.
Owner's Response: In response to this review. This family rented this property in Aug./08.The property was left in satisfactory condition. The one area that this renter failed to disclose is that they erected a tent on this property. The discription of the property states clearly that it sleeps 10 and that there is no tenting. The renter violated the by-laws of the town of Grand Bend and they also violated our agreement regarding occupancy. We have other cottages that would have accomodated a larger group and we would have been pleased to have rented them one of these at a higher rate.We as renters want to respect the town of Grand Bend and the other residents. Many people in Grand Bend have complained about other cottages that have many more people jammed in them than is safe and the problems that occur because of that.We will not be a part of that situation. As for this renter, they got caught and have had to pay the price for that.I would like this review to be posted and those that read it be the judge of who was treated fairly and who was decieved.

A Great Week

The "Old Fashioned Retreat" was much nicer than the pictures let on - a great mix of luxury and "cottageness". We really enjoyed the firepit each night, but also soaking in the huge luxury bath! Everything you might need is there, including the air conditioner, the absolutely fantastic barbecue, and lots of extra chairs/room so everyone can comfortably spread out. And my teenage daughters found the location perfect: 1 block from the main drag and only 5 minutes to the beach. We probably enjoyed too many smoothies! It was clean, pest free, and Brian was easily available for any questions. You won't be disappointed!

We loved the cottage, it was a perfect location and very well appointed - warm and cosy but not overdone. Bedding was lovely too.
Perfect for extended family as lots of living space and storage.

We can't wait to go back!

Great place in Grand Bend

Our family had a wonderful time at this pleasant cottage in Grand Bend. The house has four bedrooms conveniently arranged around a spacious living/dining room, with a charming kitchen and a wonderful patio area (with BBQ, firepit and plenty of porch chairs). We had no problems with parking and enjoyed the proximity to downtown stores and, of course, the beach. Contact with the owner was pleasant -- good communication regarding amenities and expectations. Our only complaint was the rowdy beer bash next door to us on Friday night, but they quieted down by midnight and it seemed to something limited to the weekend. We would definitely recommend this cottage to friends!

Perfect Location for a Girls Gettaway

Review Submitted: July 3, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
I organized a women's (ages 28 - 45) getaway weekend at the "Old Fashioned Retreat".

I was nicely suprised at how large the cottage was, there was plenty of room for all 12 women. The backyard was great, I was just disappointed that it was raining when we arrived and we couldn't take advantage the first night.

The comforters on all the beds were very new and has nice bright colours that gave it a beachy feel.

The cottage is steps away from the strip and the beach. Gables (local bar) is just around the corner. We enjoyed ourselves so much some of the women want to make it an annual event.

The owner was very thorough and made sure we arrived safely. He even had the neighbour ensure we got into the cottage okay. I would go back to this cottage again and recommend to others that are interested in spending a weekend in Grand Bend.

Although the parking is a bit of an issue, there is an overnight lot at the corner.

This a great place to bring the kids, spend a weekend with couples or have a nice gettaway with a large group of friends.

May Long Weekend 2008

friendly London, Ontario
Review Submitted: May 23, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
Although it was a (very) cold weekend, my friends and I had a great May long weekend at 'Old Fashioned Retreat' in Grand Bend. There were 4 couples between the ages of 25- 30 years old and the cottage was a perfect 'get away' for all of us. Only 2 out of 8 people had been to Grand Bend and by the end of the weekend our friends can't wait to come back.

We were all able to have a comfortable sleep at night (thanks to the furnace!) and 4 beds. There was a lot of space for us to hang out in the living room, kitchen, and gorgeous back yard. There is a great fire pit in the backyard which we were able to enjoy. The location of this cottage was perfect. The cottage is located about 20 steps from the 'main strip', so there was always the option for us to go out without worrying about anything.

The only situation we ran into was that there were only 2 over night parking passes and 4 cars. There is apparently no over night parking anywhere in Grand Bend. But, it wasn't a problem for us to ask the nice neighbours down the street to park over night in their lane ways (for some cash). Otherwise, the parking enforcement leave a $40 ticket.

I would recommend the cottage to anyone. The owner of the cottage made sure that we had everything we needed by calling the day we arrived. The description that I was given was accurate in regards to the location and amenities. The property was clean and well-maintained.
This cottage is definitely not a typical 'party-cottage' that you could find in Grand Bend, which is exactly what we were looking for. We were happy that it wasn't completely surrounded by loud kids. There was only one cottage behind us that was loud, but managable.

Overall, we had an excellent weekend together with our friends. We all agreed that we would rent the cottage again in the future.
