Would definitely stay here again

Staying in this beach house has been an extremely relaxing experience for me, my wife and three kids and we would stay again and recommend it. The living room/dining room is very large with high ceilings and a great place to hang out. There's a separate family room with another tv that's great for sending the kids when you want some relaxing time in the living room. The walk to the beach is less than 5 minutes, it's just across the street. The beach is rarely crowded and a great place to both swim and go for long walks. Nearby the house there's a park that has a public tennis court. It's also right next to a bird sanctuary so it's quiet and serene and has pretty views. The house has wi-fi internet access, which I've used and it works great. It was clean and nicely decorated. There's a mini-mart less than 5 minutes walk away where the kids love to go and get ice cream every afternoon. For real grocery shopping, there's a Walmart around 10 minutes away. Lots of restaurants around 10-15 minutes drive away, plus Lewes is about 25 minutes drive. Our drive was from New Jersey and there is very little traffic or congestion, especially once you get past the Memorial Bridge. All in all we give it 5 stars and hope to stay there again.

Very disappointed!

When we arrived at the rental (@6pm), it was quite an oven inside (94 deg). We suspect that that the house was not professionally cleaned after the last renters left at 11:00am because no one would be able to work in that house without AC...and if it was professionally cleaned, it should have taken several hours to clean. [Owners....please ask for proof from your cleaning company] The rug in the living room was dirty with spots, bathroom sinks were not cleaned, dust bunnies were in the hallway and bedrooms downstairs and crumbs were all through the kitchen floor. We opened as many windows as we would to air it out, and discovered that one of the dining room windows were sealed with duct tape....and of course...would not close completely afterwards. The "airy screened porched...was "airy" alright. Most of the screens were torn and barely hanging on the windows....with no storm windows or anything to replace them with. So when it rained the next day...the entire porch was saturated, including the day bed. There were so many bugs at this location(Slaughter Beach), it really ruined being outside. The grill is located on the other side of the building on a patio that is overgrown with weeds and covered in bird droppings. Yes, the small picnic table and benches are also covered with droppings (there's no picture of this area in the description). The smell of the area is detectable from Route 1...we understand its from the Horseshoe Crabs beaching and dying overnight. Lastly, the house sits in the corner of the only intersection in Slaughter Beach...pretty much the only way in or out....you hear every car, truck, motorcycle that comes and goes. By choice, we merely slept there. We spent our vacation at Rehoboth Beach or Cape Henlopen State Park.
Owner's Response: We are always upset when any renter does not enjoy their stay at our house. Unfortunately the very few who are not pleased with their stay write reviews while the vast majority that are pleased do not. To address this review specifically, this renter was not happy with how quiet and calm Slaughter Beach is; they wanted to be in the middle of a bustling beach community. Renters looking for the hustle and bustle of a “boardwalk” beach community should not consider Slaughter Beach. We tell all renters in advance that Slaughter Beach is perfect for people looking for a quiet, peaceful, calm vacation away from the craziness of everyday life. If you want to walk out of your house into a party, pay double and stay in Rehoboth.

The A/C in our home is wonderful however the prior renters clearly decided to forgo it and when this renter arrived it needed to be turned on and given time to catch up. The house normally cools to 75 degrees in 2 hours and there are fans in nearly every room. We have received very positive reviews for our cleaning service this year after changing to a new, more expensive service due to problems during 2008. We evaluate the overall satisfaction of our guests related to cleanliness every year and determine if a new service is needed. The screens on the porch had been popped out by a previous guest and not reported to us. As soon as they were reported they were fixed the same day by our local handyman. We have a host of local tradesmen available to address any need typically same day IF the renter reports it to us which this renter did not until after their stay. The complaints about the BBQ area are valid in that our handyman did not notice two birds nests in the deck rafters above the deck until this renter told us at which point they were removed and the patio cleaned. We will be installing a completely new patio area for 2010 with a new BBQ, new pressed concrete base and new furniture. As for the bug issue, EVERY beach community has bugs; it is the nature of a beach. Slaughter Beach does not have any more or less than Rehoboth or Ocean City.

Again, we are always upset when someone does not enjoy our home as much as we and 95% of our renters do. We would be happy to share the comments in our guest book to prove how pleased most renters are. Please make sure to contact us by phone and ask many questions to ensure that Slaughter Beach is right for you.

Most Relaxing week's stay ever!

One of the most relaxing vacation spots ever! If you want quiet, this is the place to be! We were able to come and go without having to watch the clock or be anywhere at a specific time. The location is within driving distance to all the usual hot spots such as Rehoboth Beach, outlet malls, restaurants, etc. We were able to go to the movies and shop at all the little shops along the way. If you are a thrill-seeker then this is not the place for you. If, however, you desire a quiet, friendly place to relax, then by all means this is the place!

This house is clean, well-maintained and comfortable. The beach entrance is just a few minutes away when you step outside. The local residents are extremely friendly and helpful. There is a small mini-mart style store just up the street for any last minute items one might need. I would highly recommend this vacation house to anyone who is interested in a relaxing, stress-free vacation!

Gorgeous house, tastefully decorated, warm and welcoming at the same time! Wonderful owners. Steps from the beach. Miles away from stress but close enough for shopping, dining, clubs. The beach has a private, seclude feel so unlike the southern Delaware and Maryland beaches. With plenty of seashells to hunt and a long shallows to wade through. DELIGHTFUL!

very disappointing

House has a tenant living downstairs. This is not disclosed on the web site. Owner does not accept paypal as stated on website. House was not very clean. No light in one of the bathrooms. Deposit not returned within 30 days of departure as stated in rental agreement. After many phone calls, emails, excuses, delays, and much frustration, I finally did receive my security deposit. Renters Beware! "Home Away" was of little to no help in resolving the situation. Read vacation guarantee carefully. They only guarantee that the property is actually there, and that you have access to it. So you really can not "rent with confidence," and "have a worry free vacation," as stated on Home Away's website. The location of the property was nice, and it was a truly relaxing vacation. This is not a beach for swimming though. What a shame that the property is not managed better. With a little more attention to details such as cleanliness, lightbulbs, better commnunication, and full disclosure and accuracy on the website, this could be a wonderful vacaion rental.
Owner's Response: This person did NOT STAY at our property. She had a contract to do so, showed up 3 days late, decided not to stay and then was angry that we would not refund 100% of her money so she fabricated this review.

1. We do take Paypal

2. Our Beach IS SAFE for swimming as confirmed by the DE EPA reports which test Slaughter Beach along with Lewes and Rehoboth

3. The house is professionally cleaned after each stay

4. She did not get her deposit back within 30 days because she threatened to sue us - she DID get her deposit back as have ALL of our renters

5. Lightbulbs.... really? :-)

Not Quite the Same

nma Lancaster, PA
Review Submitted: August 31, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
The information listed on the HomeAway website did not seem consistent with the rental - i.e. the house was not oceanfront and we could not swim at the private beach.

It would have been nice if the house were a bit cleaner. And, the bottom portion of the home was already occupied by a tenant which was an inconvenience.

This could probably be a nice rental/vacation for a family if all of the rental information were updated and corrected on the HomeAway website and the tenant and rental situation taken of.

Although, we could not swim at the private beach - the beach was very scenic and the homes across the street from the rental provided a nice scenic view. The weather was very nice.

Slaughter Beach, itself is a quiet and peaceful vacation area, although it is very remote and far out from stores, gas stations, etc. The locals seemed friendly and helpful with information regarding Slaughter Beach - what to do and what not to do, etc.

The house was great! The owners are great! Just an overall great place.. Give it a try you will not be unhappy! The only bad thing is you can't stay for the whole season!

Home away from home

Review Submitted: May 13, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Slaughter Beach. The kids enjoyed the adjacent playground and the beach was a short walk across the street. The wildlife refuge behind the home provided lots of bird watching opportunities and the community was wonderfully quiet. When rainy weather arrived, we visited nearby Rehoboth and Lewes for some shopping.

We loved that this home had two distinct living areas and the kids loved their bedroom perch overlooking the playground and wildlife area.
