A beautiful house on the Big Island

Review Submitted: May 26, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful house, and we enjoyed the kindness and hospitality of the owners as well.
They put so much care into making the house special, from the lavish gardens in front to the koi pond and plants out back, to of course excellent maintenance of the interior.

For three people (spouse and self and her mother), we had plenty of space; her mother had her own private room and bath. There's still another bedroom that could be used (with private entrance and bath) with more people staying there.

Paradise indeed!

We (3 adults) just finished spending July 5 to the 14th, 2008 in paradise! This house is beautiful as well as the grounds overlooking the ocean. The owners of the house maintain gorgeous gardens offering you fresh fruit right off their trees and homemade jam. It is very spacious and well furnished to easily hold 6 adults or more. The 3 large bedrooms are so well situated that everyone has a lot of privacy. It is very quiet as it is on a very large property so one can enjoy meals outside on the back patio overlooking the ocean or in the front garden while the cardinals eat at the feeders. The owners will gladly inform you of upcoming local events but yet remain unobtrusive. It is also perfectly situated (20 min. from Hilo) which brings you closer to all the great attractions: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Maku'u and Hilo Farmers Market, Lava Tree State Park, Ahalanui State Park,Kapoho Tide Pools, Mauna Kea Observatory, etc. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone

We had our family summer vacation on the Big Island for 18 days, 11 days on the West side in Kona nd the last seven days on the East side in Hilo Area. We certainly had a great time in this Hawaiin paradise, visting the rain forests and the Volcano Park on this side.

This house is conveniently located close to Hilo about 20 minutes drive. Great ocean views, clean with all the eminities on the premises. Owners have done a tremendous job in landscaping the yard and you feel right at home in this environment.

Both live in the adjacent to this house but stay pretty much out of your way; however, they are very friendly and willing to help you if you have questions or inquisitive about the local attractions.

When we arrived at the house Daghild cut a fresh coconut from the tree, our kids enjoyed peeling the skin and drinking coconut milk from the shell. Also feeding the fish in the pond was a real treat for the children and the variety of birds, specifically the red cardinals. We took plenty of pictures of their house and those will definitely find a spot our album.

If you want to share a piece of paradise on the Island, we would certainly recommend staying at this property.

It was a real pleasure spending

This place is truly paradise. There are no words that can describe this place enough to give it any justice. It is the best vacation rental that we have stayed. The pictures on the websites are beautiful; but the house is much more gorgeous in person. You have to see it for yourself. The house is built with open space and the view of the backyard is to die for. This has the best looking yard on the whole block, or possibly the best in the subdivision. Not only you get ocean view, there are palm trees and other foliage as well. The house is very clean and spacious. Furniture is arranged with a sense of unclutterness, making maximum use of space and allowing for beautiful view beyond the glass door and windows. Daghild puts special touches such as providing personal CDs and books. Other necessities such as kleenex, tissues, handsoaps, dishwashing liquids, etc. are provided throughout your stay. The kitchen is beautiful with granite counter tops and is very well-stocked. Most places I've been to had only 1 set of silverware and/or they were old, cheap kinds. Here, there are 2 sets of nice, quality silverware, lots of cabinets & drawers, plenty of pots and pans, Christopher Stuart dishes, saran wrap, zip locks, spices, cooking oil, tea light candles, paper towels, etc.

The front yard has so many different kinds of flowers. Everywhere you look, flowers are blooming. The bees drank the sweet nectar from the flowers (I have pictures). The cardinals and the birds sing songs during the day; while the fishes and koi swim in the serene pond. We watched the sun rise every morning and had breakfasts in the back yard drinking in the beauty of the lush foliage and the ocean. Every night we let the gentle Hawaiian trade winds caressed our skin, watched the starry sky and the moon, and listened to the waves crashing on the cliffs.

It is wonderful to meet Daghild and Erhard. From the time I emailed them and received the responses, I felt a sense of friendliness and warmth from their sincere emails. Daghild and Erhard are very friendly, unpretentious and exude the aloha of the island. They offer valuable advices on places and things to do, but do not intrude on your privacy. It is like staying with friends, but still having your own space. Erhard caught chameleons and bugs for our children to enjoy. My son, Eric, climbed their tree to get coconuts. We husked them and drank the sweet, clear juice inside. We regretted that we had to leave. However, we will be back for a longer stay next time.

Daghild, Erhard: Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. We had wonderful memories here. We moved to the condo on the Kona side for 2 nights. Although, it has oceanview; it was a total let down. It is going to be very difficult to find a place that is comparable to the Rick's House. Mahalo and see you next time.

This is an absolutely spectacular home and setting. It greatly exceeded our expectations, the pictures on the web site don't do it justice. The home and gardens are extremely well designed and maintained. It is probably the best value for this kind of rental on the Big Island (or all the islands, for that matter).

My wife and I stayed two weeks in August. The owners were not in residence, and we had absolute privacy. The trade winds were kind for most of our visit, and the house is well ventilated. There are plenty of mosquitoes, so be prepared to deal with them.

I can't add much to the previous descriptions in the guest book. It is a beautiful and peaceful place, and the owners do a terrific job making it comfortable and convenient. I highly recommend it.

This was truly a dream vacation home. With so many windows and the huge teak 12x12 glass sliding doors to the back porch, you truly felt like you were living outdoors. Best of all, I could look for whales right from my bed each morning. Daghild also welcomed us to feed the Koi fish. So, with my coffee each morning I sat and watched them eat and play with the ocean as my backdrop. The landscaping is incredible, and the selection of plants/flowers/fruits growing all around was quite a testiment to the hard work that goes into making this property first rate. Daghild and Erhard were so respectful of our privacy. I would have loved to have them around more to answer all the questions I had, but they were very careful to not interrupt our stay. Staying in this home would make it difficult to stay anywhere else. Thank you for making my first trip to Hawaii one to remember!

What a fabulous experience we had at our big island rental. The view is awe inspiring and the home has all of the amenities you could possibly ask for. Our kitchen was full of dishes, eating utensils, storage space, appliances, and many useful gadgets. In our refrigerator we found jars of fresh Lilikoi and Papaya jam, made by Daghild, waiting for our arrival. A washer and dryer are provided. The home was immaculate and we were greeted with tropical plants and flowers in each bedroom and in the dining area.

The home is very spacious with comfortable furniture and beds. For our computer, we had a very nice desk with DSL access and controlled lighting. There was lots of closet space and each bedroom has its own bathroom with a shower. Large windows offer a view of the ornate grounds and the ocean from each room. Portable chairs and beach accessories are provided so that you can sit by the shore and look for whales while improving your skin tone.

When we arrived home after dark they were thoughtful enough to have the outside lighting on for us. There were many days when we'd come home to fresh fruit by our door, picked by Daghild or Erhard, placed there for us to eat.

Erhard and Daghild have their own, self contained Ohana attached to the house. It was wonderful to have them there. They helped us with questions about the area, plants, animals, and anything that a tourist might like to know. NEVER ONCE, was our privacy in jeopardy. You can count on them to promptly answer any questions you may have, prior to your arrival, while you're there, and following your departure.

We have rented on the big island many times in the past and consider this out finest experience. We now consider Erhard and Daghild among our friends. We will definitely rent from them again in the future. They are very nice, knowledgeable, and gracious people to be around and do business with.

Owners were on site in an adjoining apartment. They are friendly, respectful of privacy, very considerate and helpful. It is everything as described. A beautiful home, landscaping and area. We plan to vacation here again in the future.
