A week in St John, priceless!

With a sigh of contentment, I'm sitting out on the deck of Captain's Cabin looking around at the million dollar view (full moon rise) :). Time has moved more slowly this week and Jim and I have snorkeled every morning. I taught Biology for many years but books and videos can't come close to viewing the natural wonders first hand. The varied and dynamic life on the coral reef is a world away from the every day life back home in New England. In our opinion, the best snorkeling spots are those here on the South Shore. Our favorite: Great Lameshur Snorkel around the rocky shore on the left side of the beach and keep going! You'll see everything mentioned in this book (Captain's Cabin guestbook in the house) and more. Our favorites: a giant spotted ray (Spotted Eagle Ray), wahoo, nurse shark, and the amazing multi chromatic squid.
Don't miss the hamburgers at Skinny Legs and Vie's garlic chicken. You can get your basic groceries at Lily's Market (a.k.a. Iraqi Packi) and beer, wine, rum, tequilla as well. Just expect to pay more.
If Sue and Dan can accommodate you for a day of sailing on the 46' Shakti, you'll have a fantastic time. Thanks again, Sue for sharing this paradise and being such a considerate host.

My husband and I just returned from our 10 day stay at CC. The villa is just as described on the website. It was clean, well maintained and location to surrounding attractions perfect. The views were awesome, the balcony at night could not be beat! We saw more shooting stars then ever in my life and the full moon was incredible. The singing of the tree frogs and crickets went on until daybreak at which time you then heard the happy chirping of the yellow sugar birds gathering around demanding more sugar in their feeder! And you also had the crazy white cat yowling for attention and food! He was funny and a welcome visitor! Although the cabin is small it was more than adequate and very quaint. The new shower downstairs is so incredible! Yes, getting in and out of bed was a bit of an exercise in agility (not for elder or disabled folks) but just added to the uniqueness of the place! The view while laying in bed was wonderful! We would be up with the sun at 6:15 and out exploring the many beaches by 8:00 am each day-returning to CC late in the afternoon to enjoy the cool breezes, drinks on the deck and relaxing! Dining in Coral Bay was a bit limited but all very good and close by the CC. The owners were wonderful! The passion that she has for the island cannot be concealed! She was very helpful with arrangements and info prior to our arrival. We were lucky enough to meet her in person and her enthusiasm of her property and the island was infectious to say the least! She also sent us home with some sea salt from salt pond that she had collected herself. I would recommend CC for young adventurous people! It was very private and quiet and everything you could hope for! It is not on a busy road where cars/trucks/buses go by which is very important to us. St. John and the CC was a very memorable vacation and the snorkeling and beaches are the best! Be sure to rent a 4x4 vehicle so you can explore from sun up to sun down! And remember to keep left! ha!

Owner's Response: November is still "pre-season" here on St. John, so lots of the restaurants and shops on the island are not open.

Our other home, Horizons Cottage, is a bigger traditional home with beds that are easy to get into ...and has views even more incredible!

Thank you for the nice comments about Dan and me. We do want our guests to have a great time and fall in love the Captain's and St. John.

Having been to St John on day trips from St Thomas while on cruises, we decided to spend a week here, as this is one of our favorite islands. Upon reading all the great reviews and checking out the many pictures and descriptions, we decided this could be just the place to relax. We were not disappointed! So as not to rehash all the beach and restaurant reviews I will 2nd all the previous choices.
In summary, if you are looking for a 4 star resort this is not the place, if a cozy, relaxing, peaceful, million dollar view setting is what you seek then look no further. Sue was great and easy to work with and we look forward to a return visit. Thanks Sue!

Best Trip Yet

I have been coming to St. John for eight years or so. I have stayed all over the island in all kinds of places. Captain's Cabin is perfect. It was easy to see that the property is treasured by the owners. CC is clean. The outside of property is well groomed (vegetation grows crazy during the rainy season). The whole set up is extremely user friendly and well thought, example: when you need a hook for your towel - it's there! The kitchen has any and every tool / appliance that you will need. The new second bathroom is awesome! If only I had a view like that when I shower at home...

As for the scenery and atmosphere, CC cannot be beat. Breakfast on the deck before heading to the beach is all the motivation you need for a fantastic day on St. John. If you are smart, you will spend a day sailing on the Shakti with Sue and Dan. If you love the water, it will be the best day of your vacation. Sailing does not get much better. What a beautiful boat and there are not two better people to spend the day with sailing. If you are lucky, they might let you drive!

Coral bay is great little town. Very low key and relaxed place. There are all kinds of local friends to be made. Have fun and remember to slow down and enjoy your trip before its gone.

I'm getting ready to book my second trip back to St John and couldn't help but notice the last review. I found Captains Cabin to be everything that the website said it was and "more". The views from all the rooms were even better in person than they were online.(BREATHTAKING) I found the bedroom to be quite unique and comfortable My husband and I just adored this place. We did meet the owner and thought that she was extremely nice and very accommodating. They even invited us to their other house for hor'doerves and cocktails one night ! My husband and I are looking forward to our return visit !!!!!

Too rustic!

Review Submitted: May 12, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
We arrived to find out that this cabin is actually two tiny cabins connected by an exterior stair case. This means that in order to get from the bedroom to the upstairs bathroom you have to get out of the cabin downstairs, go outside, walk up the stairs, hopefully, you have the key, get in and use the bathroom and go back outside, down the stairs to go back to bed. While this might not sound that bad, it turns into an extremely scary situation because without the automatic lights it's pitch dark. On top of that the bedroom that you're staying in has a ceiling so low that you're likely to hit your head when getting into bed. Clostrophobic is the best way to describe the bedroom, which made it impossible to rest. Seeing outside, you could make out the staircase and the ocean, but because it's so low you don't get much of a panorama. It's not bad during the day, but at night you're in a horror flick. The battle-hardened lady knew exactly what to say and how to say it, as if she was reading off a pre-written sheet when we called her about this. I truly hope the comments below were unsolicited because that's what we based our decision on. I also hope this sheds some light. Thank you.
Owner's Response: Captain's Cabin, along with lots of homes in the Caribbean, has an outdoor staircase leading to the bedroom. The photos and information clearly shows this on all of our websites. Captain's Cabin is quite unique and built like a boat-hence the low ceiling clearance over the loft-style bed. The majority of the bedroom has normal ceiling height with desk, chair, built in dressers and lots of cupboard space. The views from the bedroom are spectacular as they are from the entire very private home. We've constantly being told by our guests that these are the best views on the island and the photos don't do it justice.

There are three motion detectors that clearly illuminate the way to the bathroom for those late night trips. We also have flashlights in the bedroom and the main living area.

As for the "battle-hardened lady" comment. ...My response to her regarding the outdoor staircase was saying I was sorry she wasn't happy. I then asked her if she had looked at the photos and information on all of our websites which clearly show how Captain's Cabin was laid out. People love to stay with us because it is so different.
As you know, people write their own unsolicited reviews. This is our very first negative review -ever!

we arrived at sunset and found power out on this side of the Island. It was the start of one of many GREAT evenings spent on the deck. No reason to leave this side of the Island. Salt pond Bay for snorkling, many hiking trails, Miss Lucys for lunch!
Captains Cabin was private and quiet for morning coffee or a romantic elegant dinner. Picture perfect view.
Thank you Susan. The Cabin is everything you said it would be.

My friend and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Captain's Cabin back in April. It was our first visit to St. John, and while we realized there were many sights to see on the island, we both agreed we would be perfectly content if we spent the entire week sitting on the deck and soaking in the incredible view! It's got to be one of the best on the island. The constant breezes were so refreshing, the little crabs scurrying under the trees were a delight, and I can't imagine I will ever experience anything quite like that open-air shower again! An amazing place. Thanks Sue!

My husband and I really enjoyed
our time in St. John and staying at Captain's Cabin. It was so beautiful and quiet that we were able to totally relax - something very hard for my husband who is a type A workaholic - and de-stress. Of course being the animal lover that I am, I enjoyed getting my cat "fix" everyday with little personable Lucky who is a real sweetheart..... We even rented a boat for a few days to get around to the different gorgeous beaches
and that was a real treat for us.

Thanks again so much for helping to make our ten year wedding anniversary one to remember! -Renee and Michael

Oh My Gosh! What an excellent vacation we had at the Captain's Cabin. We spend 2 glorious weeks in the adorable cabin January of 2006. We have now booked our January 2008 vacation with Sue and we are bringing 2 other couples with us! Beautiful views from the huge deck. We woke each morning looking across the ocean right from our bed! Everything you could need available at the cabin. The location is secluded but still just minutes from wonderful restaurants and fabulous beaches. No kidding...just 5 minutes from Salt Pond Bay and that was our favorite beach. No crowds, beautiful reef to snorkel over, hiking. Who could ask for more. Drive to Cruz Bay was near enough to run over for shopping and supplies. Sue was so easy to deal with and so accommodating. We have never had such a wonderful time on a vacation before. Thanks Sue for making everything just perfect!
