Monte Lagello in Umbria

Review Submitted: August 26, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We have just returned from a fantastic week staying in the castle which was an unbelievable experience. Monte Lagello is on a hill top and can be seen from miles around offering fantastic views of the totally unspoilt countryside . It is accessed up an unmade road , which takes 7 minutes from the tarmaced surface,so we would suggest that you make sure your car insurance covers tyres. The road surface of the access road is good, consisting of stones, but there is a section which Rob particularly enjoyed with a bend and an uneven camber !
The apartment is upside down with the bedrooms and bathroom on the lower floor accessed by stone steps from the castle entrance. The mosquito nets on the windows and the shutters were very useful. The master bedroom is a very good size with excellent storage and a 1.80cm bed hich was lovely. The other bedroom is small with storage boxes under the beds but our 14 year old daughter found it big enough for her. She didn't venture up the ladder to the sleeping area above.
The kitchen/lounge is very well equipped and we enjoyed the videos, CD's and DVD's provided as well as the selection of books. There is a huge amount of plates, bowls etc and although there is not an oven, we managed to cook adequately in the cosy kitchen area with a spectacular stone sink.
We found the other residents very friendly but it helped that we spoke Italian. Rosanna made friends with the other children in the pool, who included another British family and although there are 23 apartments in the castle , the pool area was never crowded despite it being August.
We visited Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto and Todi, all lovely towns. We had intended taking the train to Rome for a day but couldn't pull ourselves away!

The apartment was very clean and it was helpful to have Maria and Ilario around in case of difficulty. Before we arrived, Julia provided us with some useful information and there are files full of local details in the cupboard. We would suggest that if you want to use the internet that you bring your laptop to use in the communal room.

The castle is protected by big gates for which a fob is provided on arrival and this made us feel very safe.

We would recommend a holiday in Monte Lagello, particularly this apartment ,because of its terrace which got the sun all day although there is a big shady umbrella too. We are looking forward to returning.
Owner's Response: I am delighted that this family enjoyed our apartment so much; I would just like to clarify a couple of points: rather than a conventional cooker the kitchen is fitted with a 4-ring ceramic hob, a separate oven and also a microwave; when we stay for 2 months I love to cook and have fed 8 guests with no problem so have added a dishwasher; although the second bedroom is small we have had adult couples stay there comfortably as it is high it is airy and as well as the underbed storage there are hooks and hangers and a spacious wardrobe with hanging space and shelves in the passage outside; the access road is a normal Italian 'white road' found all over the countryside in Italy which are maintained regularly and do not require 4WD; naturally speaking Italian is an advantage but by no means essential, the caretakers speak English as do many of the owners or other holidaymakers who may be there. The internet (WiFi) is free. I would like to thank Jane, Rob and Rosanna for taking the trouble to send this review and for their kind words and I look forward to their return. Julia and Tony

Lovely appartment in superb hillside setting

Review Submitted: September 15, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
This is a super gem of an appartment which totally lives up to its description, well appointed and maintained, absolutely picturesque hillside castle setting with a lovely pool which is ideal for young kids and teenagers. Hard to imagine you would find a nicer place.

Plenty to see locally, some delightful real Umbrian unspoilt villages, but also a perfect base for the delights of Umbria and beyond. Even Rome is only 2h away.

This is an ideal appartment for 2 adults or family with children aged 5-18. Master bedroom is wonderful, very spacious and luxurious. Second bedroom especially suits children up to 16/18, adults may find a bit on small side.

We found the other residents charming and very very friendly, as well as child friendly.
Owner's Response: Although the second bedroom is on the small side, we find adult couples frequently stay there very happily. The ceiling is very high so the room is airy and is well lit. The beds are comfortable, there is plenty of storage space and, as most of the time is spent out and about, on the terrace or by the pool, or in the spacious living area, they spend little time in the room itself.

What better way to spend Half term

Review Submitted: September 10, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
We were fortunate enough to spend a week at Monte Lagello during the children’s half term. We arrived with the best of intentions to do a number of the sight seeing places, but once the children had found the pool they just didn't want to leave. We therefore spent a relaxing week mostly by the pool in beautiful sunshine and with fantastic views over the local area. We particularly enjoyed the terrace where we ate most of our meals and often spent the evening just star gazing.

The beautiful apartment was everything you could have wished for and more including plenty of literature about the surrounding areas with details of many recommendations, a few of which we managed to try during our breaks from the pool. One such recommendation was the local restaurant were the children wanted to go back for the delicious pizza and we wanted to go for the wine! ( food was excellent too)
The couple who manage the apartment were really great, they made us welcome and came to our rescue when our car broke down.

We had such a great time, it is difficult to put into words other than can we come again. So much to see and do, and so beautiful and utterly relaxing! The kids are counting the days till we get there again.

The accommodation and setting was great but found some of the home owners not friendly towards having children there, which made us very uncomfortable and plain that we were not welcome.......
Owner's Response: I was very surprised to learn of this incident as in the 5 years we have been letting our apartment to families it is the first time we have had such a comment. Indeed Italians are well know for their love of children and other guests have commented on how friendly and welcoming the Italian owners are, especially to children. This was clearly a one-off occurrence and should not deter familes from renting in the future. The issue is being pursued with the owner in question.

An Awesome Umbrian Gem!

Review Submitted: April 5, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Monte Lagello has been a fantastic experience. If you love 'all things Italian' then this is the place for you! The apartment is clean, well equipped and caters very well for both the hot and cooler days - as we found with both sun and snow this Easter! The terrace is totally private with absolutely spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. The swimming pool would be fantastic in summer and, if you need any help or advice, the Italian caretaker and family live on site all year. After the hustle and bustle of Venice we were happy to initially enjoy the wonderful peace and quiet of the castle. There are numerous walks along local paths through the olive groves and hills. However, once we started to explore Umbria there was no stopping us - it really is awesome. We particularly liked nearby Perugia as well as the small hilltop towns of Todi, Assissi and Orvieto. The Umbrian countryside is stunning - and, should you wish to, the nearby dual carriageways make travelling to visit Montepulciano, Montalcino, Siena, Florence or Rome really easy. We, in fact, had visited these towns previously and stayed more local to Monte Lagello - the markets are superb for fruit and produce, there are shops and supermarkets nearby in Marsciano and Spina and we never finished trying out the local restaurants - we plan to return as soon as we can!

I just thought I’d let you know that we had a wonderful time last week. It was just what we needed after a very busy few months at work and school. The weather didn’t prevent us from completely falling in love with the castle and surrounding area. As someone who has travelled in many parts of Italy and lived there for 6 months some time ago, I really do think you have found the most beautiful place to have your holiday home.

Thank so much for all the thoughtful touches in the apartment that made it so comfortable for us to stay there.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words - we feel exceptionally lucky to have found Monte Lagello

A castle in the Air

Review Submitted: March 15, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2007
We have finally returned from your' Castle in the Air'

We had the most fantastic time we really loved your apartment in its most amazing setting. It was a real pleasure to stay and relax and just unwind from city life. You have a beautiful place in the sun and it was a joy to stay.

We made visits to various places and our favourite restaurant was Piccolo Mondo with a great host Juliano, a really lovely man who also happened to provide great food. Especially the fish on Wednesdays.

Our son Toby who is 18yrs and blind absolutely loved it he said it was so peasceful and was a really nice place to stay and he wants to come back.

Maria and her husband were great hosts and a wealth of information and local knowledge. Also great supplys of fresh fruit and vegetables. The pool was excellent and very quiet.

Totally relaxation in a wonderful setting and place to rest your head after a hard day of doing nothing!

Barry Kelly & Toby
Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for your kind words. We feel very lucky to have found it! We like Piccolo Mondo too, and if you want fish it's a good idea to check when he's serving it as it can vary. I hope you will visit us again soon.
