Monte Lagello in Umbria

We have just returned from a fantastic week staying in the castle which was an unbelievable experience. Monte Lagello is on a hill top and can be seen from miles around offering fantastic views of the totally unspoilt countryside . It is accessed up an unmade road , which takes 7 minutes from the tarmaced surface,so we would suggest that you make sure your car insurance covers tyres. The road surface of the access road is good, consisting of stones, but there is a section which Rob particularly enjoyed with a bend and an uneven camber !
The apartment is upside down with the bedrooms and bathroom on the lower floor accessed by stone steps from the castle entrance. The mosquito nets on the windows and the shutters were very useful. The master bedroom is a very good size with excellent storage and a 1.80cm bed hich was lovely. The other bedroom is small with storage boxes under the beds but our 14 year old daughter found it big enough for her. She didn't venture up the ladder to the sleeping area above.
The kitchen/lounge is very well equipped and we enjoyed the videos, CD's and DVD's provided as well as the selection of books. There is a huge amount of plates, bowls etc and although there is not an oven, we managed to cook adequately in the cosy kitchen area with a spectacular stone sink.
We found the other residents very friendly but it helped that we spoke Italian. Rosanna made friends with the other children in the pool, who included another British family and although there are 23 apartments in the castle , the pool area was never crowded despite it being August.
We visited Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto and Todi, all lovely towns. We had intended taking the train to Rome for a day but couldn't pull ourselves away!
The apartment was very clean and it was helpful to have Maria and Ilario around in case of difficulty. Before we arrived, Julia provided us with some useful information and there are files full of local details in the cupboard. We would suggest that if you want to use the internet that you bring your laptop to use in the communal room.
The castle is protected by big gates for which a fob is provided on arrival and this made us feel very safe.
We would recommend a holiday in Monte Lagello, particularly this apartment ,because of its terrace which got the sun all day although there is a big shady umbrella too. We are looking forward to returning.
Owner's Response: I am delighted that this family enjoyed our apartment so much; I would just like to clarify a couple of points: rather than a conventional cooker the kitchen is fitted with a 4-ring ceramic hob, a separate oven and also a microwave; when we stay for 2 months I love to cook and have fed 8 guests with no problem so have added a dishwasher; although the second bedroom is small we have had adult couples stay there comfortably as it is high it is airy and as well as the underbed storage there are hooks and hangers and a spacious wardrobe with hanging space and shelves in the passage outside; the access road is a normal Italian 'white road' found all over the countryside in Italy which are maintained regularly and do not require 4WD; naturally speaking Italian is an advantage but by no means essential, the caretakers speak English as do many of the owners or other holidaymakers who may be there. The internet (WiFi) is free. I would like to thank Jane, Rob and Rosanna for taking the trouble to send this review and for their kind words and I look forward to their return. Julia and Tony
