In the heart of Alfama

This was our 1st visit to Lisboa and our apartment was a perfect base from which to set off on our explorations of this unknown city. Set in the atmospheric mediaeval Alfama, we were able to explore cobbled streets leading to the Cathedral Santo Antonio and the Castelo de Sao Jorge, both of which were only 10 - 15 mins walk away, as well as sample the many Fado bars and restaurants situated within a few minutes walk. Baixa and the Praca do Comercio were again only 15 - 20 mins walk, so easy to get to and explore on foot. There were also a good selection of local shops where we could buy any provisions we needed. The vibrant atmosphere and the friendliness of our neighbours made our stay most memorable and we would certainly recommend this location and apartment to friends.
The apartment itself was both clean and well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay and it very quickly came to feel like home. The private patio was most appreciated; a wonderful place to sit and have a relaxing glass of wine after a day of exploring or to have morning coffee! The fact that this area was gated and secure was reassuring and provided a feeling of safety within an unknown city. We felt that this apartment was even better than the impression given by the photos on the web site.
The only slight negative was that for the first day of use the drains in the bathroom were a little smelly but this soon cleared and they didn't cause any problem for the rest of the week.
The owners were very helpful and not only met us to guide us through the labrynth of alleyways approaching the apartment but were easy to contact and make arrangements with. They also provided us with local knowledge about the transport system and where was good to eat, listen to Fado, cultural centres etc. They had also provided basic provisions in the kitchen e.g. coffee, tea, fruit, and also a local aperitif, all of which was most welcoming and very much appreciated.
We were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed the food in Lisboa. We had prepared ourselves to be unimpressed as the guides we had read were not particularly complimentary! Whilst menus were generally limited, what was on offer was almost always fresh and simply presented and the fish was particularly good. As for the pastis well, we sampled this delicacy somewhere different every day and never tired of it! I have to say Lisboa is the first city I have ever visited where not once did we have a bad cup of coffee!
