Holiday at Casa da Fonte

Review Submitted: September 5, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We had an extremely successful holiday here with our three boys ranging in age from 10 to 18. The mixture of things to do suited everyone. Exactly as advertised, at the house there is the excellent pool, lovely gardens and games room which offered great scope for staying put and just lapping up the facilities. Relaxing for all. The house is in a lovely spot, in the middle of lush green countryside and walks from it are good - we had one particularly memorable one through the woods and up a hill to a beautiful waterfall, another to a shack type bar for a beer. A highlight for some of us was a mountain biking expedition guided by Mike. There are numerous things to do from the house by car and we only really scratched the surface as we were just there for a week. Much enjoyed though were a couple of river beach swims, a delicious lunch in Moncao (at the Rough Guide most recommended restaurant) and a wonderful day by the sea just over the border in Biona where the waves are big and the Spanish lunch was excellent. The house itself is well maintained with a very well equipped kitchen and Mike and Maria who are to hand when needed couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful in all respects. We enjoyed eating out at Mike and Maria's excellent preferred local restaurant in Paredes (a meal for 5 was 50 Euros and the salt cod seriously good) but we also made good use of the bar b q at the house - on one memorable occasion with 3 kilos of the freshest sardines. Our road map stumped us a few times and we found ourselves lost. Without exception people we asked for help with directions were warm and wanting to help despite our lack of the language. This warmth kindness and friendliness was marked too in all the shops and restaurants. We would thoroughly recommend both the property and this part of the world.

We have just returned from a fantastic week at Casa da Fonte. The house, pool, gardens and view were idyllic, and provided everything we needed for a perfect holiday. The swimming pool was extremely popular with the younger members of our party (ages from 17-21), and the games room provided further entertainment in the evenings and relief from the heat of the day. Mike was an extremely helpful and hospitable host, with plenty of advice for places to go and things to see in the area. We particularly enjoyed kayaking along the River Minho and the local beaches, as well as the walks straight from the farmhouse. As inexperienced drivers in Europe, we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to navigate the very quiet roads. Car hire at Porto Airport was problem free, and Mike's directions easy to follow. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate recommending this beautiful property for a taste of real Portugal. And the bread rolls delivered to our door every morning were delicious!

escapist heaven

This is a hidden gem, far beyond our expectations - all the 21st century comforts, but tucked away off the beaten track in a timeless, unspoilt landscape. In the casita we had everything we needed in one spacious, characterful open plan room and on our doorstep, the pool, barbecue and spectacular scenery. We explored the area by hire car and more locally on foot and by mountain bike, following ancient hidden trails through forests, streams and primitive villages up to stunning viewpoints. Our laid-back host, Mick, guided us through some memorable, fun-filled biking adventures. This really is a great escapist retreat, lovingly created and warmly welcoming, which the website can't do justice to. Can't recommend more highly.

A fantastic rural casita!

Thanks to Mike's precise directions, we found Casa da Fonte with no problem. What a wonderful, comfortable and relaxing place he and Maria have created. Our only regret is that we had to leave! Mike was very helpful at pointing out walking paths and demonstrating the unique 'pot' method of fresh bread delivery to your doorstep each morning--what a treat!
The room was very comfortable and the wood burning stove took the chill off the cool evening air in April. The kitchen and bathroom facilities worked well and were very up to date. The bed and linens were very comfortable and the wooden shutters on the doors and windows ensured a good rest in the morning. A sound system and a combination TV/DVD provided entertainment as well as the games room with a ping pong table and other games plus computer access and a library.
The casita has its own little patio with an umbrella table which was a delightful place for breakfast and a picnic lunch.
We would definitely recommend this spot to a friend and it would be ideal for a family or a group of four couples when booked in conjunction with the three bedroom farmhouse.
We visited in early April so although the pool looked inviting, the air temperature held us back.

Owner's Response: Thanks Carmen,

We only started advertising with this website in January and you were our very first Spanish guests, even though the border with Galicia is only 30 minutes away.

So glad you loved it and hope to see you again,

Mike and Maria
