Wonderful Vacation

We spent a wonderful 5 weeks at Herdade da Maroteira - exploring the vineyards, the cork and olive trees, "walking" the dogs, observing the birds, sheep, goats and chickens, and relishing the scenery.
The cottage is clean, well-maintained and very comfortable with everything provided - just like home! The location is perfect to explore the Alentejo region; along with visits to Lisbon, the Algarve and the Douro Valley.
Our hosts were very friendly, warm, sincere and extremely helpful. We felt very welcome and comfortable at Herdade da Maroteira with its peaceful and breathtaking scenery.
Our only regret was we had to return home after 5 weeks of peace, tranquility and warm bliss.
Thank you to Philip, Margarida, Mafalda, Bea and all for making our holiday wonderful and a dream come true!

Farmhouse in the cork forest

Review Submitted: July 6, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The extremely comfortable farmhouse and its location ticked all of our boxes for the perfect holiday: a peaceful away from it all location; stunning landscapes; great wildlife; history and archaeology; friendly and informative hosts; excellent wine. All of this in a country where, as one person put it, the only access law seems to be 'shut the gate behind you!' Miles and miles of tracks provide endless opportunities for walking and some great off road cycling, which we managed to combine with birding, but next time we'll take a compass with us. It's very easy to get lost!

Birding highlights within 50 miles of the location included: Booted, Short-toed and Bonelli's eagles, Azure-winged magpie, Black-winged Kite, Black-bellied Sandgrouse and Griffon Vulture.

We'd definitely recommend this property to people wanting to enjoy the wildife associated with the traditionally managed cork forest of the Alentejo region.

We spent 4 wonderful days on Philip´s and Magarita´s cottage - what a pitty we could stay longer!! It´s a beautiful, absolutely peaceful place, close to interesting cities like Evora and Estremoz in the middle of oak wood trees. If you like quietness of nature with cultur nearby and if you get along with dogs (they´re very lovely!), it´s definitvely one of the most beautiful places to be in Portugal. We highly recommend it!

Really a perfect place for a quiet family holiday: marvelous surrounding, excellent wine, great starting point for trips to Evora, Monsaraz or other places in the wonderful Alentejo. We enjoyed a wonderful week in a breathtaking landscape. The hosts were very friendly and did everything to make us feel at home. The accomodation is comfortable and clean, especially the two spacious bathrooms, there is nothing we would have missed.

“What wonderful days we have spent at Herdade da Maroteira. The cottage is very comfortable having everything you need to make you feel at home. Its location is absolutely perfect for exploring all parts of the Alentejo region. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. ...to this peaceful place we give the highest marks.”

“To enjoy a fine glass of local wine on your terrace still warmed by the evening sun. To listen to the humming of the bees and to the song of the cuckoo…while staring down the slopes of the Alentejo hills. Add all this to a most friendly welcome by our hosts to complete a picture of the lovely Herdade da Maroteira. ...we felt so welcome not only by the generously filled fruit basket and a bottle of good wine we found in the house but also by the attention you arranged for our twins... !”
