La Estrella - a star of an apartment

This was the third year running we have stayed at La Estrella in the village of Canar. Canar is a small village, located off of the main tourist trail yet only a short drive from it. The fact we’ve been back shows how much we like the area and La Estrella itself. It is situated at an altitude of around 1000m, and commands excellent views over the valley, the main town of the region Orgiva (some 600m lower in altitude), the Sierra Lujar mountains and also the Mediterranean – easily reached for a day trip to the beach.
Canar itself has a small shop with a very friendly owner in the village square, which will cater for most needs. Fresh sandwiches will be made up on request. A little Spanish helps, but you could get by easily enough without – this applies for many of the bars and shops in the smaller villages of the region. In the bigger towns, you’re likely to find more English spoken, and translations of menus.
Canar makes a good base for walking, the primary activity for us, and it is possible to reach the top of the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacen, in a day trip. There are other less demanding walks available, still with stunning scenery, though don’t expect to find much on the flat. At this time of year there is a lot of running water and greenery about, and wild flowers abound.
The apartment itself is well equipped with everything you are likely to need, with 3 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen/dining room and a small balcony on the main floor. Upstairs there is a utility area, plus one of the apartments best features, the roof terrace. Due to the village’s altitude and views this is a great place to sit out for breakfast, to have a barbecue, to bathe on the sun-loungers or use the spa bath.
Robin, the owner, is very friendly and easily approachable. Despite not arriving until late evening, he was happy to come and meet us with the keys. On earlier visits, he had shown us around the village – where the shop was, the bars etc, and recommended places to eat out in other villages and where to visit, providing a personal touch. All recommendations turned out to be excellent . El Limonero in Orgiva, or a bit further away El Corral de Castano in Capiliera both serve very high quality meals.
