Highly recommended

Les Platanes has everything you could wish for: super position within walking distance of Carcassonne's attractions, space, comfort, a grandstand view of all the action in the Place Carnot and a wealth of information to assist with your holiday plans. The owner, Caroline, has thought of everything needed to create a wonderful home from home - we knew from the minute we walked in, that we would have a fantastic holiday.
We spent our week enjoying leisurely breakfasts with fresh bread etc. from bakers just a few steps away from the apartment, watching the comings and goings in the square, and then travelling to Niaux [prehistoric cave paintings], Montsegur, Puilaurens and Peyrepertuse [Cathar sites], Rennes le Chateau, Limoux [to sample the sparkling wine!], Narbonne and Perpignan [the Procession de la Sanche on Good Friday is not to be missed].
We would return in the evening to the comforts of the apartment, either to prepare a meal or to try some of the recommended restaurants on the list provided [ we liked Chez Fred and Le Sixieme Sens ]. We found the apartment to be very clean, well equipped and spacious for us all [ourselves plus son and daughter and their partners.
We met so many friendly, helpful people on our travels and wished we could have stayed longer - hopefully we will return to explore more of this wonderful part of France and stay in this fantastic apartment.
Finally we would also like to comment on the wonderful service we received from Caroline - from the first contact when we enquired about the availability of the apartment, to the note of thanks when we returned the keys. Everything was so well organised and we felt more like friends than clients - all in all a wonderful experience which we would wholeheartedly recommend.

Wonderful end to a boat trip

The sailing quartet Twickenham
Review Submitted: October 2, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
This is a delightful and comfortable apartment and was great for home comforts following ten days meandering along the Canal du Midi in a boat. We loved hanging out of the windows watching the square and the cafe life and ambling around the streets of the Bastide. The apartment is beautifully furnished and well equipped and we made good use of the guide books (which had the effect of inspiring me to return for more visits) and CDs for guests' use. We also followed guest recommendations on where to dine and were not disappointed. Le Sixieme Sens was excellent but a bit warm as it is in a cellar. Whilst the night-time noise was at times noticeable those of us who kept the windows closed were fine. The compensation was waking up to the playing coming from the music centre (not the nightclub) across the road - it was great and a different instrument every day.

Secure parking under the Square Gambetta was very good - the cleanest and brightest-lit carparking I have ever seen and the staff were very helpful to our party when buying a card for our stay.

Caroline's notes sent before you stay are comprehensive and extremely informative and illustrate the excellent service she and her managers provide. No hesitation in either returning or recommending the apartment.

Owner's Response: What wonderful appreciative clients! We'd love you to make a return visit.

We too have done a Canal du Midi trip and combined it with a stay at the apartment and can thoroughly recommend it. We are more than happy to advise you if you are interested.

Perfect Base

Review Submitted: September 24, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Great appartment - perfect for exploring Carcassonne and the wider Languedoc region. Our only regret was arriving Sat pm after the Place Carnot Market was finished and leaving a week later on Sat am and briefly seeing all the wonderful food we could have bought for our stay! If you can fit in the Saturday morning market at the start of your stay that would be a huge plus. Lots of amazing places to visit in the surrounding area - loads of recommendations in the visitors books at Les Platanes. This really is a perfect base and I would have no hesitation about returning for another stay.

Owner's Response: These clients clearly loved their holiday. What a shame they missed the Saturday market - they will just have to make a return visit!

Review Submitted: September 12, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We stayed at Les Platanes in August 09 and had a wonderful 10 day holiday with our 2 daughters aged 15 and 13. We had days out by train to Toulouse and by bus also. The apartment is wonderfully situated for exploring Carcassone and bus / train stations and as such we did not miss having a car.
The weather was fantastic and we would thoroughly recommend Les Platanes as a base for exploring the area

Owner's Response: Thank you to this client for the review. Yes, all the apartments are a wonderful base for exploring the area, whether or not you have a car. Both the railway station ad the bus station are about a five minute walk. And of course the apartments themselves are right in the centre of the Bastide, overlooking the Place Carnot.

Excellent Apartment - Great Place

Phil & Jean Sheffield
Review Submitted: July 26, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We stayed at Les Platanes at the beginning of June and had a lovely relaxing holiday. The apartment was excellent; clean, well equipped and maintained with a great location overlooking the square - very handy for drinks before dinner, and also for local shops and supermarkets. The stairs up to the apartment were slightly steeper than expected and a little bit dark.
There are lots of things to do and see in Carcassonne without a car, but with one it's easy to explore the beautiful and interesting surrounding area. As described car parking was easy and the underground parking at 20 euros was good value with very friendly helpful staff.
We would definitely recommend this apartment and will use it again when we return to this area.

Owner's Response: So glad Phil and Jean enjoyed their stay at Les Platanes and look forward to welcoming them on a future visit. The stairs should be brighter next time they come as the whole of the entrance and stairwell is due to be redecorated shortly (but do remember these things take time in France so I'm not making any promises!).

Feel like a local

What a delightful base for a holiday. Ideally placed to explore the many wonderful sights and places in the region, but also the perfect location for a relaxing holiday just being part of the community and soaking up the atmosphere - and the sun. The apartment was equipped to the highest standard and included everything you could possibly need. In the end I actually set myself a test to think of something that was missing. I failed!

If you enjoy Cathar history, outstanding markets and the delights of watching the characters of Carcassonne from your window you will love these apartments. If you also enjoy good food, wine and watching the boats go by on the Canal du Midi you will be in seventh heaven!

Three mums - no kids

Review Submitted: June 15, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We left the kids at home to enjoy a relaxing weekend away. The apartment was spotlessly clean, very well equipped and spacious. It was perfect for our needs as everything was within walking distance. We arrived when the Saturday market was in full swing which was fantastic as we were able to stock-up on provisions for the weekend (unbelievably good cheese). We were eating-out on a budget and found the best place for that to be la Cite where there were countless restaurants to choose from. We loved the location of the apartment and spent rather a lot of time drinking wine in Place Carnot, rubbing shoulders with the locals rather than the tourists. The owner, Caroline could not have been more helpful or efficient, and we had the added pleasure of meeting the managers when we arrived, and they too were very pleasant. I should mention that there is a nightclub close by and one of our party had trouble sleeping on the Saturday night because of the music. Having said that, the other two in the party slept right through it. This was a minor irritation and wouldn't stop us going back to the same apartment. Likewise the streets were cleaned and bins emptied ridicuously early in the morning which proved a little noisy for the person sleeping in the living room. One other point to note would be that a lot of attractions close on Mondays (ie canal trips, the lake etc) and as such you should plan your sightseeing around this. Overall, we would definitely recommend this apartment for a weekend away. I would like to return at Christmas time and take my daughter with me.

Owner's Response: The apartment is ideal for a girls' weekend trip, as it is so central, particularly with the wonderful market below the windows. I'm sorry the night club disturbed one of the party. Apparently the clientele have started to come outside to smoke since the new anti-smoking laws started and sometimes leave the doors open, but local residents have raised objections and we are hoping this will improve. But we are delighted that it didn't spoil the holiday and hope the clients will make a return visit, as mentioned.

Carcassonne Gem

We spent the winter in Caroline's Les Platanes and can't say enough good things about the apartment. The decor is lovely - very French. Caroline's very nice appointments make it a lovely place in which to stay - long or short term. The kitchen is particularly well equipped. Conveniently located for the Bastide and Cite (of course the midi, train station, also) Carcassonne itself is an ideal location from which to tour this area of France. There are many things to see within an hour or two drive should you wish to rent a car. but it really isn't necessary in order to enjoy your visit.

Owner's Response: We met these lovely clients during their long stay in Les Platanes and were delighted to see how much they were enjoying their winter in Carcassonne. It was clearly a big bonus for them being so central.

Family weekend in Carcassonne

Family from Berkshire Berkshire, England
Review Submitted: December 22, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
We spent a long weekend in Les Platanes in the end of September with our 16 month old baby and grandma. The location of the apartment is superb! We spent hours drinking coffee in the dining room watching the world go by. There was a market in the morning and we went shopping for fresh bread and cheese. Lovely! There is also a supermarket just across the square, so it was really easy to get everything necessary for our baby. Although it was outside the holiday season, there were plenty of things to do – shopping, walking to the Cite, eating out, walking by the river and a trip to one of the circular villages. The information available in the apartment about the places to see and restaurants to visit was very helpful. We found several good restaurants and enjoyed eating out.

Owners of the apartment have prepared everything so well for the guests. We received the information about the apartment and the town prior to the trip so we were well prepared. The apartment is nice and very light. There is everything you need in the apartment, they even had a cot for a baby. You could not wish for a better place to stay, thanks to its excellent location. It is so easy to pop out to get fresh bread or do some late afternoon shopping or go out for a drink. We walked everywhere and found everything within an easy reach.

Owner's Response: Thanks to this client for pointing out - as well as all the usual things! - that it is also an excellent out-of-season holiday destination.

A Christmas Fairyland

Rosey B Wrotham,Kent ,UK
Review Submitted: November 1, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
Les Platanes was the perfect place for a Christmas break. We came with our three children for a short holiday just before Christmas and we just couldn't believe our eyes when we looked out of our apartment window and saw the wonderful Christmas festivities spread below us. The children were down in the square within minutes of our arrival, trying out the skating rink. What's more, at only 3 euros an hour including the skates, they were doing it twice a day. We went down to the square to watch them, drinking hot chocolate or mulled wine, while Papa noel wandered around. There was a Christmas market there as well, with wooden huts with snow covered rooves, and Christmas trees all around - it was so pretty. Each evening there was a superb show of lights playing over the square and around the fountain, which had been decorated with artificial icicles. The view from our window was magic. There were lots of other things for the children to do and see like the crib with moving models that had been set up in the old covered market around the corner, sleigh rides in one of the other squares, and the giant ferris wheel just outside the Bastide, with amazing view of the La Cite. There were so many other Christmas entertainments to do and see, such as the ice carvings! Our biggest regret was that we left the day before one of the Ice Spectaculars that take place on the ice rink. We shall just have to come back another time!

Owner's Response: The apartments are all perfectly situated for the wonderful Christmas activities that take place in Carcassonne. It's just as much fun for adults as for children, and as well as being able to watch everything from the windows of the apartments, you can sit at the cafes round the square and watch it all.
