Wonderful

We stayed at Villa Tukad in May and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff at the villa made every effort to ensure our stay was relaxed, trouble-free and enjoyable, and they succeeded in every way.

The villa is clean, well maintained, cosy and totally peaceful, and the local wildlife extremely interesting to watch, from geckos to butterflies to birds. And what a fantastic pool!

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for families with young children as the villa is not especially childproof for those under 2 or 3. The ponds, stream and pool are all easily accesible for a curious toddler; the stairs are steep with no handrail or guard and the terrace is not fenced.

We also found this a bit farther than we thought from some places thanks to the Bali traffic mainly. A trip to Seminyak would take anywhere from 30 mins to an hour.

Overall I would recommend this villa to enyone seeking relaxation, which you will find in spades. The personal service leaves you feeling very well looked after and the cooking was amazing.

Thanks to everyone at Villa Tukad for our great holiday.

Owner's Response: Toddlers in Bali villas: you will find that most villas in Bali have unfenced pools and ponds. If you want to stay in a private villa it is necessary to keep an eye on little ones or ask one of the staff to do this for you - we can arrange full-time babysitters to do this for longer periods. The terrace now has a fence and the door to the stairs can easily be closed and locked. Other families staying at the villa have not mentioned this as a particular problem (please see other reviews). On the other hand, there is no danger of children being snatched or running into the road, as the gardens are completely private and secure with two-metre perimeter walls.

Driving to Seminyak: Seminyak (starting from Cafe Warisan) is about 12 kilometres from the villa and can be reached in 20 minutes - there are short cuts and ways of avoiding the worst of the traffic - ask the staff or use an experienced driver. The road around Kerobokan (past Bali Buddha and Cafe Mocha) has recently (July 09) been improved and this makes a big difference. The problem is not so much the distance as the traffic in Seminyak itself where it can take more than 30 minutes to get from Cafe Warisan to Legian beach. Top tip is to avoid the rush hour (4:30-6:00 pm). Heading North, East and West from Villa Tukad there are lovely traffic-free drives to Ubud, Tanah Lot, Bedugul and North Bali. If you stay in Seminyak you always have to confront the traffic wherever you go! But if want to be in the midst of the tourist action and the traffic every day then a hotel resort in the Kuta/Legian/Seminyak strip might suit you better.

Phenomenal stay in Bali

We stayed at this beautiful villa near Canggu for 1 month and that was not long enough! The staff were welcoming and extremely friendly. The location was great as it was away from the hustle of Kuta but only a 20 minute drive (with no traffic!). We rented a car for the entire month which we would highly recommend as the villa is in a very remote part of the island.
We stayed at the villa with our 2 boys ages 10 and 12. We did drive to Legian almost every day as they are avid surfers and the beach in Canggu is not the best novice surfing beach. We rented boards from Redz on the main road in Canggu and he was probably the best bet around.
Echo Beach House is an amazing hang out for weekend BBQ dinners and wonderful atmosphere.
The villa is pretty central for exploring different parts of the island. We went to Gitgit waterfalls, Ubud, Medewi, you name it!
A trip to the Denpasar central market with Desak (cook) is an absolute must.
We will definitely return!

A wonderful and memorable holiday

Review Submitted: July 7, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Villa Tukad is certainly a very special place. From the moment we arrived we felt completely at home and a huge wave of contentment and relaxation descended upon us.

Situated between two villages and surrounded by rice fields the Villa is in an ideal place to stay if you want to experience real Bali. We loved being able to walk in the countryside and villages watching ordinary people go about their daily lives. However to go anywhere else requires transport. The “20 minute” bike ride to the local Echo beach is not for the faint hearted-we did not attempt it after we had taken the taxi ride there! Taxis though, are easily summoned to the Villa or for longer day trips Budi their recommended driver is excellent.

Everything that has been said about the staff at Villa Tukad is true. They are an absolute delight! We felt well and truly looked after, safe and secure. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The house too did not disappoint. It is so beautiful and so tastefully furnished and the garden is wonderful.

Perfect for honeymooners

Villa Tukad is absolutely idyllic! We had an amazing time there on our honeymoon - the service and accomodation is as brilliant as any top hotel, but it comes with extra privacy.

Desak is an amazing chef and can prepare 3 course meals every night. (And she comes with the price of the villa!) Of course, you can choose the menu that you want, but we found it exciting to let her have some free rein and we got to taste some real Balinese cooking. We thoroughly recommend her Sweet Chilli Prawns & the Ayam Betutu (Balinese Chicken). Desak even taught me the receipes for these two dishes!

The garden is fantastic, with many seating areas dotted around, tall palm trees and beautiful flowers. Sitting at the dining table on the verandah, you look out over the jungley garden, which is lovely. Many of the movements of the staff are unseen: as you eat breakfast on the verandah someone will be cleaning / tidying the bedroom, and as you eat dinner they shut all the mosquito nets and windows etc. The whole set up makes you feel really special. All the staff speak some English and several of them are fluent.

The villa has a driver that they recommend (at an extra cost, but not too expensive) and he is incredibly knowledgeable and a very safe driver. He took us on several day trips to see the island, and knows where the good markets are, and shops, waterfalls, lay bys with monkeys and bats, hot springs, temples and views of rice terraces. We recommend a trip to the Elephant Safari Park too.

We can not recommend Villa Tukad highly enough to you! You will not be disappointed! We had an amazing honeymoon.

Preview of Heaven

My husband and I rented Villa Tukad for three weeks over Christmas and New Year 2008/2009. From the moment we arrived we were taken care of by an excellent, hardworking team of staff who also had the ability to remain discreet at all times despite their attentiveness.
The house is located in a small Balinese village set amoungst paddy fields giving you the opportunity to really experience Bali, and is only ten minutes from Echo beach and not far from the buzzy life and excellent restaurants of Seminyak and Canggu. I was able to practise yoga everyday on the veranda in front of the beautiful lush, tropical garden shared with the most beautiful butterflies I've ever seen - one variety was black with a brilliant turquoise blue belly. Infact we enjoyed exploring the garden and river and often sat under one of the two gazebo's to read and sip tea or stare at the Lotus flowers growing in the pond- heaven.
Every evening just as the day breaks into dusk the garden occupants burst into a wonderfully orchestrated chorus of song before after some minutes calming into a gentle night tempo - completely bewitching.
The cook did the shopping for us and prepared delicious meals of our choice. She even baked a lovely banana cake
at my request on a couple of occasions.
The house is beautiful and kept immaculately clean at all times and the exotic garden well tended. We felt peaceful, safe and content and slept like babies.
We had a wonderful holiday visiting Bali but I can honestly say that the highlight of our stay was Villa Tukad.
Highly recommended.

A steal for nature lover

A must for those who want to stay in a real Balinese village with magical garden and absolute serenity. The villa is tastefully decorated with every small detail attended to. The staff is simply wonderful.

It's such a pleasure waking up every morning listening to nature's symphony from the garden, having greetings from the lovely and friendly staff who take such good care of the villa, playing with the pet dog Dinah and having American breakfast prepared by the maid.

We are spoiled with villa menu, in-villa massage, private pool shaded by trees most of the time, bales where we read and laid and didn't want to rise up again, a real river flowing through the garden and genuine service from Balinese people.

Never feel like a tourist in this villa. Feel like home in my own private Indonesian villa!

Thank you everyone from Villa Tukad!

La Villa Tukad est un bijou dans un écrin

Review Submitted: August 29, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
