The perfect family holiday home

Sitting out on the terrace late evening, watching the sun set and seeing the lights of far-off villages come twinkling on in the dusk, nothing to disturb the peace but the chirrup of the cicadas, you could be forgiven for thinking Fongrieve Haut was miles from civilisation. Overlooking its own little valley with a lake at the bottom, the nearest village on the crest of the hill opposite, deep in winegrowing territory, it's nowhere near as remote as it seems, yet the surroundings are incredibly peaceful - we could count the cars that passed each day on our fingers. And for wine lovers there are more vineyards than you can easily sample within a couple of miles radius - and several within walking distance including the neighbouring Fongrieve Haut winery itself.
The house itself is generous and gentile, extremely comfortable, with everything provided from golfing umbrellas and hot water bottles in case it gets rainy, to bikes, ping pong and board games for the children. Often it's hard to know how well equipped a house will be, but this one was everything you could ask for, with a well equipped kitchen, cookery basics like seasonings, oil and vinegar, a welcome basket for breakfast, lists of the local market days, restaurant recommendations, plentiful bedding, spare toiletries, first aid equipment... I really cannot fault it. Children will love staying in their own private tower, and the extra TV room is a real boon if part of your party wants to make noise and the other wants to relax in the more formal sitting room.
This wouldn't suit those looking for complete rural isolation, but as a family holiday home it's warm and welcoming, brilliantly located for museums, chateaux and more active attractions like go-karting, horse riding and kayaking, and offers really excellent value for money. The owners went out of their way to be helpful, and there is a local caretaker in case you need anything while out there which was really useful.
