Lovely apartment, too far without car

Our first visit to Nice with 2 teenagers - apartment is lovely, clean, well appointed in gated complex with secure pool area (situated at the bottom of a very steep drive). However, relying on the information of only 3 kms from the centre of town plus good local bus and taxi services (and not minding using our feet as we are walkers) we were very disappointed with the location in relation to the public transport - hence the reason for the average rating. The local bus service past the apartment is not very frequent, doesn't run on Sundays or public holidays (as we found out on Bastille Day). The taxi service in Nice is quite frankly pretty appalling for the 5th biggest city in France - there is only one main number to call, you don't seem able to book a taxi if they are busy, they are expensive and erratic in their charges, for example, a taxi from Carras to apartment (about 3 kms) anything from 15 to 25 euros, from half way along Promenade de Anglais to apartment at least 35 euros. Buses stop running extremely early (last one to right outside apartment is 8 pm), last main one we needed from town to Carras on a Saturday night was 8.40pm(!), taxi from town 'not possible' is the quote we were given (they just didn't want to know, we tried 5 times for a taxi, they hung up on us every time) - we had to walk from town to the apartment which took 1½ hours, completely spoilt our evening especially as the last part from Carras to the apartment is uphill and steep and takes 45 minutes. On the last night in Nice, we made a point of checking all bus times so we were back in plenty of time to catch the last No. 73 bus for 9 pm (which stops only 2 stops away from the apartment and is a bit more frequent than the No. 65 which stops outside the complex) only to be completely unsurprised at that stage to find it didn't even turn up - fortunately, we actually managed to get a taxi that time.
We found having an unreliable taxi service forced us to rely on the bus timetable which cut our evenings very short unless we wanted the long walk home and this put a real damper on the holiday, By the way, the tv channels are all French so make sure you take dvd's (as fortunately we did) to keep yourself and the kids entertained on those early evenings in.
On the plus side, the weather was wonderful, pool lovely and not crowded - visit Nice old town, Eze and Monaco (fabulous), owner was very helpful when contacted.
Highly recommend this apartment - if you have a car.

Owner's Response: I recommend to all my customers, when they book our apartment, to hire a car from the airport. I also give the bus details to all customers. The bus time table indicate the time the busses are running.
