Just what we were looking for...

Review Submitted: May 21, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
When we first arrived at Altamar, we were truly impressed. The villa was spacious and perfect for our family. I don't just mean the size and bedrooms, but the grounds, the location, and above all the feeling of the place. We had a full moon the first night there and we all swam in Sharks Hole under the moonlight. Spectacular. A few people in our party have lived in Hawaii for several years, so staying in a house all done up and with a pool was definitely not what we were looking for. We wanted a villa that captured the island and allowed us to be a part of our surroundings. Altamar did this perfectly. The neighborhood was lovely and reminded me of the area I lived in Hawaii; quiet, local, and away from the touristy spots. Yet it was so easy to get around and drive to the highlights, like Oistens. We were there for my sisters wedding at the Crane, so the location was also perfect for me to make the frequent trips there and spend time with other relatives on Crane beach. My family and I are already talking about when we can all get to Barbados again and stay at Altamar. Thanks Sharon for such a wonderful place. And thanks, also to Yvette, Hyacinth, and Hazel, for the incredible hospitality.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Altamar. We were confident that our villa would suit you perfectly, given the tranquil setting and location only 5 minutes from the Crane. You are all most welcome to return whenever you're ready to visit Barbados again!

Holiday from Heaven

What a wonderful time we had at Altamar! So peaceful and comfortable. There is everything that you (or at least we) could want.
Breakfasts overlooking the Atlantic at the bottom of the garden, lunches mostly out and about the island, cocktails on the way back via a fish market and barbecue back at Altamar. The local rum shop beckoned after that. - You won't get a friendlier reception anywhere in the world.
The villa is spacious with a very relaxed atmosphere, having a very large lounge / dinning room - not that we ever ate indoors! Bedrooms follow in the same way being very roomy. We found all we wanted in the kitchen (mostly the blender for cocktails!)
Most of our time was spent in the shady covered patio or on the deck which had a choice of furniture to suit our mood, either comfortable swivel chairs for conversation or reading or expansive sunbeds for taking the glare off our lilly-white bodies!
Swimming in Sharks Hole (at the end of the garden) was the best way of keeping cool and it was so convenient to have the outdoor shower to rinse off before stretching out on the sunloungers again.
We hired a Daihatsu Terios from Stoutes Hire and it was perfect for four adults to tour the island.
We had been told that Oistins fish fry (Friday and Saturday evenings) was a must and so it turned out to be. -An evening filled with music, fun and food.
Another glorious outing was 'Cool Runnings' - a luxurious all included catamaran sail up the west coast from Bridgetown with stops for snorkelling with more fish than you could imagine and also, of course, the turtles.
Sounds like Heaven to you? It was for us.

Winter Golf Break

Review Submitted: February 8, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
Great location with fantastic views and nice breeze to keep heat down.

Lovely well maintained accomodation and gardens with great support from Yvonne the local agent.

Extremely relaxing and many late evenings on the sun deck sampling the local Mountgay rum!

Nice protected beach area for swimming on the edge of the property.

Only 20 minutes from Barbados Golf Club.

Oistins is a great place at weekend for Seafood.

We are hoping for a repeat performance.

Priceless view

Altamar is in Long Bay, St. Philip and situated next to Shark's Hole (which is regularly visited by by residents and visitors alike). The property boasts a view of the Atlantic Ocean that is absolutely breath-taking. The villa itself is comfortable with and has three good size bedrooms, a roomy kitchen, and easy access to Shark's Hole, which is like having your own swimming pool in the back garden. It is useful to have your own transport as this gives you more access to some of the activities that are in Barbados. Stoutes Car Rental provide a very good service with a wide range of vehicles for hire. A must see for everyone is Harrison's Cave. The cave has to be seen to be believed! The natural formation of stalagtites and stalagmites, the natural flowing water and the history behind it, made it the highlight of our stay. Ocean Park is great for the chidlren to visit, especially at feeding times, when they can feed the rays and watch the sharks, baracudas and piranahs being fed. Overall this was an lovely break and a lovely place to take it.

Owner's Response: We're glad you had a great time at Altamar and in Barbados and hope we can welcome you back in the future.

Prospective guests please note that although the main villa has three bedrooms (mentioned in the review), there is an additional 4th bedroom with bathroom available in the separate cottage adjacent to the villa.

My wife and I had an incredible time at Altamar. The location couldn't be more perfect. incredible views, amazing sharks hole beach. Great snorkelling (on calm days). My wife is pregnant so the reef makes it possible for her to swim, as the other local beaches are too rough most of the time. Rented a car and toured up west coast one day and east coast another. Far better to visit those places and come home to your peaceful huge back patio and chill out with a rum and coke and watch the waves break on the rocks in your backyard!

Wonderful time spent on the coast

I have stayed at Altamar twice so far and intend to visit again as soon as possible. With the great breezes blowing off the water, while relaxing on the back patio, it was easy to unwind and realize what life is supposed to be like. Located on the quiet side of island it was wonderfully restful. The tranquil days started and ended, with a quick dip in the ocean right next to the villa. The hosts were great with splendid information and suggestions concerning restaurants and activities, both those close to the villa and also in town. We spent many days on the nearby beaches and also took several boat trips from town. Each trip was uniquely special and we had a great time.

The next section asks who I would recommend this villa for, I do not know of any person or group that would not find a stay at Altamar a fantastic experience.

The perfect place to stay: Altamar, Barbados

LizzieH London, UK
Review Submitted: May 17, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
Altamar is in a great location away from the touristy areas with a good local bus service or hire a car to make the most of the island. A variety of shops and restaurants are near by. The house has the most amazing views and we liked nothing better than sitting on the terrace, eating our breakfast and watching the waves break on the reef which is just offshore, cooled by a gentle breeze (not found on the touristy west coast where it can get very hot).

Next to the house is a small sheltered beach where you can swim, or drive 5 minutes to a number of other "picture postcard" beaches.

The house itself is very spacious so perfect if you have a big family or are renting with friends - you will all have your own space!

Hosts very helpful in answering any queries. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to stay in such a lovely place - I returned home feeling very chilled out. We'll be back!

Owner's Response: Very pleased to hear that you had such a relaxing time at Altamar Lizzie. We should point out that the closest substantial shopping area, which includes a large, modern supermarket, is about 5 - 10 minutes away by car. However, there is a small shop & restaurant within walking distance from the villa.

Excellent Holiday!

After having attended a conference at the island of Barbados, we extended our stay at this marvelous place.
Breathtaking location at the border of the ocean, enjoying the sound of the waves, the little sandy beach just a few meters away, and more beaches in walking distance (enjoy the waves hitting the rocks and feel the salt on your skin), the enjoyable environment, hummingbirds finding there way to you,.....
Excellent starting point also to explore the rest of the island by car!

Barbados = Holiday!
Hope to come there soon again.

Owner's Response: Glad that you found some time to unwind after your conference Kurt. We're so pleased that you both enjoyed your stay at Altamar & would be happy to welcome you back.

"Villa Altamar" Long Bay, St Philips, Barbados

Joules Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
Review Submitted: May 15, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
Our 2nd visit to this idyllic holiday property and its wonderful location. The villa is very clean & comfortable with well maintained Gardens. The customer service provided by the Owners, the agent "Yvette" & the maid "Hyacinth" was second to none.
We definifely recommend our friends to visit this beautiful holiday home.
Bridgetown, has everything. We liked the Submarine trip, the brilliant Helicopter trip around the island, the National Museum visit. The Fantastic views from various view points, ie. St Johns Church, Tent Bay, St Martins Bay, & Bathsheba, to name but a few. A car is a must to see Rural Barbados, (Daihatsu Terrios-handles the rougher roads very well.)
We stayed 3 weeks, it is a pity we had to come home so soon.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you've enjoyed your stays so much at Altamar Brian & Julie. You're welcome back anytime!

You make a very good point that a rental car is very useful to get around rural Barbados. Although not essential when staying at Altamar as there is a regular bus service, we do recommend hiring a car.

Having stayed at Altamar twice I would have no hesitation recommending this villa to anyone thinking of visiting Barbados, it is fantastic accomadation in an idyllic location. As well as being on the seafront itself it is also close to, for my money, the best beachs Barbados. A very relaxing spot but within easy reach of all the islands atractions. It couldn't really get much better!
