Chalet Bergrose in the Summer
Review Submitted: August 9, 2008

We booked Chalet Bergrose for 2 weeks in the Summer, for 5 people. Although it has only 2 bedrooms, the sofa bed was extremely comfortable for the fifth person, a teenage boy.
The Chalet was as advertised - 5 star. The fixtures, fittings and appliances were good quality. Walls were adorned with interesting art works. Little additions, like a good pair of binoculars and an arrival gift in the fridge, were appreciated.
The owner took the trouble to phone on the second day to ensure everything was as it should be.
Wengen itself is growing, with new building spreading down the hillside. The views across the Lauterbrunnen valley to the opposite mountain, and down into the valley itself, are impressive. Although Chalet Bergrose has established itself in a niche some way up the hill, there is still a short and fairly steep walk to town. The town itself has many restaurants, but the dip in the £ against the swiss franc has made them seem a bit expensive. The option to eat in (or on the balcony watching the Jungfrau redden in the setting sun) saved money and gave us the chance to sample breads, cheeses and other locally bought food. Wengen has a very good bakers and cheese shop.
Most of us like walking and there are many well signposted tracks, of varying length, in and around Wengen. The scenery is spectacular, with the snow capped Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch usually in sight, and there was usually the option to return by cable car or train if we walked too far.
We had rail tickets that allowed us unlimited travel on the Swiss rail network, so were able to use Wengen as a base for wider travel. Actually, it's not ideal for this as there are 2 changes of train before reaching a station big enough to directly connect to more distant and interesting destinations, but Swiss trains are punctual and connections quickly avaialable. We were able to breakfast in Wengen, lunch in Italy and get back to Wengen for dinner.
Having been out for the day, and frequently tired, the Chalet apartment was a pleasure to come back to and, after a few days, it felt as if we were returning home!
I would recommend Chalet Bergrose for anyone wanting to combine a relaxed summer environment with hiking and exploring this beautiful part of the world, or, indeed, for anyone who just wanted to put their feet up for a week or two as the apartments' amenities and location provide the ideal environment.

Owner's Response: The walking, especially when the weather is good is stunning, around Wengen area is a World Heritage area. In fact when it is raining and with storms its is just as impressive as when its sunny.
