Barbados condo
Review Submitted: March 23, 2009
Date of Stay: February 2009
Myself, my wife and my brother, who are now all of a mature age, stayed at the condo from Feb 14th to Mar 2nd, 2009.
The facilities of the apartment are excellent, with two spacious double bedrooms, a comfortable living and dining area, plus a roomy kitchen. Having satellite TV was a bonus, and the view from the balcony is soothing, overlooking the Caribbean. The balcony is small, however, and the area surrounding Hastings Towers has become a little run down.
A big feature for me was security. You need a swipe fob to get into the building, and there is a grilled lock gate approaching the corridor to the apartment, which also has two secure locks. Because the apartment is also on the third floor, anybody wanting to break in would have to plan their attempt meticulously! There are lifts to all floors.
We liked the location of Hastings Towers, although we did not feel that there was a good bar or reasonably priced restaurant on its doorstep.
It is virtually central between the capital Bridgetown and St Lawrence Gap, the latter being the big tourist attraction for nightlife, and you can be at either in minutes via the excellent, cheap and regular bus service - are you listening, Gordon Brown? - or the official taxis, which can be expensive.
A slight negative is, because you are not in a hotel, there is no pool. But the beach, where the sand and sea are glorious, is just across the road.
Barbados is a glorious island, and the locals are kind and friendly, I'd recommend this condo as a perfect base for getting around the island and chilling out during the days or nights. Overall, very good value for money.
Owner's Response: It all depends on what you are looking with regard to bars and restaurants. Personally, I think that Cafe Fred (about a 3 minute walk to the right of Hastings Towers) is very good value for food and drink, although a little basic. Another minute takes you to TGI Friday which is what you would expect and a further minute away is the Green Dragon - a good bar with live music - and food and finally Mamma Mia - an excellent deli and Italian restaurant.
If you want to splash the cash, Aqua (about 3 minutes to the left of Hastings Towers) is an upmarket restaurant specialising in gastronomic excellence.
