Family Holiday 2006
Review Submitted: January 9, 2008
Date of Stay: August 2007
The villa is as stated for the most part and although the pool is quite small (our 3 kids has a great time splashing around in it) the garden is huge enough to relax in - excellent BBQ facalities!
We were a little disappointed that the weekly maid service did not materialise, and that we ended up putting chemicals in the pool ourselves to keep it clean. There were also some problems with the water supply (not due to the fact that it's in rural Bulgaria!) that we had to deal with ourselves after 24 hours when the managemnt company told us to wait until the next day (no water, 3 kids, 85' C - relaxing)
The locals were fantasticly friendly and (had it not been for the builders working 12 hours a day next door when we were there) it will be a very peaceful location. Nearest beach leaves a little to be desired, we ended up driving 20 mins (north along the penninsula) to find a decent one that we couldn't smell before we arrived! Once there though, outstanding.
I'd REALLY recommend a car at this villa, village is quite small & public transport limited. It's much cheaper to hire a vehicle when you get there if you can transfer from the A/P (watch the taxi driver - he tried upping the price on us). There was a fantastic local car hire place in Karvarna that did our return A/P transfer at one third the price of a taxi because we'd had a car from him for 12 days. Sorry can't remember the name & don't have the phone number, but pop into the garage at the T junction on the Karvarna road & you'll find him or a contact.
Roads are generally good and as long as you are mindful of the traffic police (we saw them randomly checking drivers EVERY day & got checked ourselves once) and dont mind getting lost once in a while! Nearest town is Karvarna at about 3 miles(a working Bulgarian town) cheap to buy groceries etc & a fair range of shops / eateries. Very kids friendly.
Overall, exceptionally cheap to live because you're off the main tourist drag. It was great not to have to count the pennies when the kids wanted ice creams etc. Reminded me of Turkey 15 years ago (I liked it then).
As a guide (Aug 2007) expensive ice cream was about 80p, cheap ones 15p. Beer averaged about 50p & decent bottle of wine for £1.50 I think that the most expensive meal that we had (family of 5) came to about £20. It included starters (mussels - not soup du jour), mains, puds, wine, beer, fizzy stuff for the kids and a good tip!
Hope this helps.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments which have been noted. I would clarify that this is self catering only and no maid service provided free of charge. A service is available on request only, payable at the villa. Occasionally water supply to the village was stopped for repairs last summer and although a nuisance was seldom off for more than a few hours. This was beyond our control. However, new water mains have now been installed throughout the village. The pool is kept clean and maintained regularly and therefore it would not be necessary or allowed for holidaymakers to use their own chemicals. We have had no other complaints regarding the cleanliness of the pool. We spend a lot of time in Bulgaria during the summer and constantly visit our villa and its occupants to make sure they are happy and everything is to their satisfaction. Other holidaymakers at the villa confirmed to us that they were not inconvenienced by any building work at all particularly as the houses were not adjacent but at the end of the lane. (The Bulgarian builders do not work 12 hours a day - nor were they using power tools.) The nearby Bogata Beach is a pretty secluded cove approx 5 mins by bus and very popular with the locals.
