A Jewel in the Heart of the Aveyron

Donna & Don New Mexico, USA
Review Submitted: August 3, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
Over the course of an extended holiday in Europe, we rented 3 different properties and without a doubt Le Bourguet was the best of them all. The house has a stunning view from the terrace of the wooded hills and deep gorge of the Aveyron River that passes below the village of Najac. The furnishings are stylish and comfortable and reflect the many talents and loving care of the property owners; all handmade furniture and original artwork. The location in the center of historic Najac was perfect--only a short walk to the village shops with the reward of views of the chateau on the return. The owners have thought of every detail--right down to the welcoming bouquet of wildflowers!

Beautiful Najac

Review Submitted: November 22, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
After a week spent in busy Carcassonne, we arrived at Najac to be overwhelmed by the peace and quiet of the place. The house is lovely- beautifully furnished, fully equipped and right in the heart of this fantastic village. We spent every morning on the small terrace, just enjoying the superb views and then every night, with a glass of wine, watching the stars appear. Maureen and Peter are so welcoming and it was nice to know that if we needed anything, they were just at the end of a telephone. Having visited most areas of France, we decided that Najac is the most beatiful village we have been to. We never tired of those views of the castle from the top of the village, the people were so friendly, restuarants were very good and there were plenty of interesting places to visit nearby.
A wonderful holiday- we are certainly going to return sometime in the near future!

In deepest France

Review Submitted: November 8, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
The house exceeded its online description, and the owners, Maureen and Peter, makers of much of its furniture and pots, were helpful and friendly. A visit to their pottery, a short drive away, is a must.

The location is superb, overlooking the dramatic wooded scenery of the Aveyron gorge. We would guess that Najac is quickly being discovered by visitors wanting an authentic French experience. But it still qualifies as 'la France profonde', with lifelong Najacois (is that the word?) next door and a proud, sometimes eccentric, local spirit.

There are some stunning walks to be had around Najac and any number of places reachable in a day trip by car. Conques, in particular, on the medieval pilgrimage route, with its monastic treasury, is worth a visit. It is also possible to get to / from Najac by train. The station (now sadly automated) is a bit of a hike from the village, but allows you to go to the weekly market in Villefranche without the hassle of parking.

Like other visitors, we ended up eating out pretty much every night. After the expense of bistros in Paris it seemed cheap and sometimes outstandingly good. Read the visitors' book for recommendations.

All in all this was a fantastic holiday, and we think that, after years of saying we'll go back to the same place next year, this time we really might.

Great accommodation and location

Very comfortable. Extremely well equipped and furnished. The location in the middle of Najac is delightful and there are numerous wonderful walks close by. A ride on the train to Villefranche on market day is interesting and fun. A car is necessary for touring much of the surrounding area and there are many places to visit and explore. A drive to the spectacular Millau Viaduct is enjoyable and not too onerous and well worth the effort. We have stayed in many self catering accommodations over the years and this is on a par with the best of them. Our hosts, Maureen and Peter were extremely friendly and helpful in their suggestions and helped make our say more enjoyable.

House in Najac

Jezabel Drouges, France
Review Submitted: November 5, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Prefer to stay in a corporate chain hotel? Then read no further. However, if you prefer somewhere unique where the decor is hand crafted to a high standard then this is the place for you. Situated in the heart of a beautiful medieval town this one off property is equipped with everything required for a very comfortable stay. The owners, who live 10 mintes away, are very welcoming and can provide all the information on the local area.

There is something for everone here be it sporting, sightseeing or just relaxing. There are a number of good restaurants on the doorstep but you may prefer to eat on the balcony which has beautiful open views;

Highly recommended

Wonderful Stay.

Najac is a little gem waiting to be discovered. The approach to the village is absolutely stunning. On arriving at our holiday home we were a little taken aback to find it had a " shop" window (which is only used to display Maureen's superb pottery) but once inside we found it to be the most delightful house imaginable. The handmade furniture and pottery were superb and the house was equipped with everything you could wish for a perfect holiday. The main bedroom was large and airy and the bed was very comfortable. And as for the view from the balcony - it was stunning!! Apart from one day we ate out there every day.
The Sunday market in the village was a little disappointing but we made up for it by visiting the market in Villefranche on Thursday. Go by train - it's much more relaxing. We can highly recommend this unspoilt area of France for a holiday especially if you stay at this gem of a property.

Beautiful French Village Holiday Home

Wildstrider Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK
Review Submitted: November 2, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
This village house in Najac is a perfect French get-away. Beautiful, tranquil and ancient but in a village with all the services you need. Plenty of beautiful way-marked walks from the door and lots of pretty places to visit within a short drive. The owners were very helpful and flexible and happy to advise if required, and the cottage was clean and beautifully appointed. The garden is a bit inaccessible but the balcony has wonderful views. The Salamandre restaurant and particularly the Pain Suspendu were excellent as was the local boulangerie and the charming bookshop. We would certainly recommend this property to other people, particularly in autumn when the area was quiet and quintessentially autumnal. Probably more suitable for couples than families as the loft room might get hot and the crockery and furnishings were worryingly nice!

The house was bigger than we expected. It was very well kept and clean. It was ideally located in the village within easy walking distance of all the local amenities.
I would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in this area of France.

A Unique Experience

Wonderful location, clean and comfortable, exceptionally well equipped.
All the crockery and furniture made by Peter.
Owners always on hand in case of problems(which there were none!)
Our stay was the first week of October and the daytime temperature reached the mid to high twenties.
Plenty of literature, maps etc for ideas for days out.
Would not hesitate to recommend this unique holiday accommodation.
Najac is in a superb location and makes an ideal base to explore the surrounding region.

A Lovely Gîte in a Great Setting

Corby and Nick Decorah, IA, USA
Review Submitted: August 14, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
My husband and I had a delightful stay in this beautiful house. The property is very well equipped and clean, everything in good working order. The owners, Peter and Maureen, were helpful, providing maps and information about what to see and do in the region. There are lovely markets close by and great walking trails right from the village; Najac is very well situated and rich in history. When we arrived at the house we were greeted with fresh flowers, beautiful furnishings, and a well appointed kitchen. There is also a balcony which we were able to enjoy, even as early as March. We highly recommend this rental property and hope to return to Najac in the near future.
