In deepest France

The house exceeded its online description, and the owners, Maureen and Peter, makers of much of its furniture and pots, were helpful and friendly. A visit to their pottery, a short drive away, is a must.
The location is superb, overlooking the dramatic wooded scenery of the Aveyron gorge. We would guess that Najac is quickly being discovered by visitors wanting an authentic French experience. But it still qualifies as 'la France profonde', with lifelong Najacois (is that the word?) next door and a proud, sometimes eccentric, local spirit.
There are some stunning walks to be had around Najac and any number of places reachable in a day trip by car. Conques, in particular, on the medieval pilgrimage route, with its monastic treasury, is worth a visit. It is also possible to get to / from Najac by train. The station (now sadly automated) is a bit of a hike from the village, but allows you to go to the weekly market in Villefranche without the hassle of parking.
Like other visitors, we ended up eating out pretty much every night. After the expense of bistros in Paris it seemed cheap and sometimes outstandingly good. Read the visitors' book for recommendations.
All in all this was a fantastic holiday, and we think that, after years of saying we'll go back to the same place next year, this time we really might.
