Our holiday heaven

Gold Coast Northampton
Review Submitted: August 16, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My wife and I, 3 children(6,10 and 12 yrs old) and our 2 mothers stayed at this lovely property for a week. It wasn't quite the rural setting that we were expecting but in no way were we dissappointed. On the Sunday afternoon I cooked on the bbq, the girls relaxed with their wine and the children played cricket in the large rear garden. It felt like you were miles from anywhere, very private rear garden and the children loved the shed full of toys. We spent many an afternoon just relaxing in the back yard.

My mother in law stayed in the folly (granny flat) which gave her some privacy. Upstairs in the attic the children had their own special place with a wide variety of games, television and dvd player. Great for the parents as we could relax and the children could do their own thing if we weren't out doing things.

All the rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. We found it to be ideal when there was 3 generations staying under the same roof. Cooking facilities were excellent and met all our needs. Very handy having an upstairs and downstairs bathroom. The owners were only a phone call away for any questions that we had, which was reassuring.

Crewcerne was a lovely rural village with a great little museum, adequate shopping facilities for all we needed and some fabulous little pubs. Quiz night at the Royal Oak and great value meals at Oscars wine bar.

We found it to be very central comfortabley doing Weymouth, Lyme Regis, Cheddar gorge and CDreely Adventure Park at Exeter on seperate days out. Coming from Northampton it was also very easy to incorporate a visit to Stonehenge on the way through.

All in all great place for families for a holiday.

Three generations spent a very busy week at The Old Smithy and had a great time. The house had a great layout downstairs with plenty of space for us all to be together (6 adults, 3 kids). The garden is huge and very private despite the houses close by - unfortunately the british weather was not on our side to make the most of it!
The house was a good location to get to many local attractions - the Fleet Air Arm Museum was great, as was the wildlife park at Cricket St Thomas. We also enjoyed days at West Bay - the cafe in the old railway station is a must - delicious cake at very reasonable prices!! Burton Bradstock was not such a success - the cafe on the beach was VERY expensive.
All in all this rental made a great base for lots of days out and was very fairly priced. A great week was had by all!

This house is a warm, family house, clean and well-maintained.The description on the website was very accurate and the information provided by the owners was incredibly detailed and helpful. The house has a great deal of space for a large family plus extra visitors and is amazingly equipped.

The garden is a lovely spot though the fact that it is slightly away from the main house made it difficult to keep an eye on the children without someone being with them.

It is a characterful old house, so the stairs may not be suitable for a newly-walking toddler. You can also tell that dogs normally live here so if you are a non-doggy person it may be slightly off putting!

All in all it was an excellent property and it is likely that we would come back again!

A perfect property and location for a family holiday. The house is situated on the edge of town meaning that we were no more than 5 minutes drive from the local amenities. This included the local swimming pool which we used twice and our 5 year old swam his first strokes in! being on the edge of town we were also no more than 10 minutes walk from trees and fields, as well as having a multitude of country vilages within a 10 minute drive if country walks and pub lunches were the order of the day.
We visited the beach at Lyme Regis and the recommended beach with the Hive cafe, both were less than 45 minutes drive away. We also went to Sherborne Castle, Monkey World, Cheddar Gorge and Longleat, none of which were more than 1.5 hours away, so the children did not get fractious in the car.
The house was lovely too, my mother came with us and stayed in The Folly so she had some privacy, but she seemed to spend most of her time at home in the sun drenched conservatory or sitting in the large garden. The children loved the garden and a lot of fotball and cricket was played in the early mornng and late evening. When not playing in the garden they were ensconced in the loft conversion/playroom, watching sky tv or playing the playstation without hassle from their parents. Ideal for teenagers, although the roof is very low!
Al round a great place for a family holiday.

A Great House with every home comfort,We were a party of grandparents, children and grandchildren,Garden was fabulous and the younger ones loved the playroom,a special place of their own to enjoy.
We enjoyed evenings in the large family kitchen, cooking dinner and socialising over the odd glass of wine.
Fabulous walks, shopping at clarkes village(dont take the credit card)
Great Fishing locally and many attractions Monkey World was great we also went to an amuesment park, close to lots of beaches.
Crewkerene was a nice town good pubs,The Indian was good value a brilliant food,as were the Fish and Chips.
The location was ideally situated for sightseeing,we found all the locals helpful and friendly.
The property was clean very well furnished, and the owners were at the end of the phone to answer any queries.
The weather in Aug was not good but we certainly made the most of our time here.
Are rare chance to spend some quality time with our family,we also experienced some problems with the internet connection, most of us did not care as we were there to relax unfortunatlly my Daughter needed to be in contact with her office, the owner tried to help but there were gremlins in the system not her fault.
We really enjoyed our stay in this wonderful family home, this is not the average rental property,it is the owners own home, with all their own belongings in and it was a delight to stay in.
Have already enquired about next year.
I would reccommend this house to friends and family without hesitation

Nothing wrong with this property it fust wasn't to our taste.

Was clean & a good base for a holiday lovely gardens but didn't like the following:

Not very rural, on edge of a housing estate of quite a large town. Crewkerne was a bit dreary,

Advertised with internet access, despite being given passwords couldn't get it to work.

Advertised with full Sky package, however as we weren't given PIN number weren't able to access all films.
Owner's Response: We are always grateful for feedback, but given the wonderful, positive feedback and lovely cards and chocolates left by our other guests (thank you!) we were quite shocked and most disappointed with this rating.
Whilst the poor weather will always affect peoples holiday experience we were a bit suprised at some of the comments.
Crewkerne is a rural market town not a large town. We have ticked both the rural and town boxes on our details to give honest and appropriate guidance. Comprehensive google maps and distances of other local towns, attractions and pubs were left, and just a short stroll up the road leads you to miles of fields, steams and footpaths. Sadly, it doesn't sound like the weather allowed much exploration for some this summer. A great pity.
All gusets are given the PIN to the Sky Box office facility and over this summer £28 was left in our honesty box for films viewed on this service. We always leave our mobile numbers for you to contact us as quite often a quick conversation can solve many minor issues (like not knowing the PIN) and, we genuinely enjoy having a chat with our guests! We were sorry the wireless system let a couple of our holiday makers down - unfortunate that it decided to play up when it was working perfectly when we left it! It is also a shame the engineer we contacted couldn't solve the problem for you at that point either.
Perhaps the first statement of the feedback sums up the situation - 'Nothing wrong with the propety - just wasn't to our taste'.
As mentioned, we are very grateful to have had so many written feedbacks with glowing reports left for (and sent to) us.
Part of an e-mail from one family who stayed this summer:
" Just one of those things with the internet connection it happens to us all at some time.... We all had a great time and it was a pleasure to spend a week with our Grandchildren a very rare treat, you are lucky to have such a beautiful home".

And another:

"house and garden great, the kids loved your toys and were very careful with them"

We look forward to welcoming guests new and old to our lovely family home. Please do contact us - we are happy to answer any questions. Happy Hols!
