Return Visit - Just as Magical as the First

LyndseyMaria London
Review Submitted: June 12, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
After first visiting last October we were determined to return this year. The property is striking, and highly individual; thoughtfully designed as tranquil retreat by the wonderful owners.
Your time here is what you make of it - for us, having quality time together free from distractions such as tv and internet in beautiful surroundings in a place that really does feel like your own home is our idea of a perfect break.
A decent car/4x4 is a must for the roads round here, and there are many interesting places to visit using La Bolina as your base, or you need not leave the pool at all!
Much love to Rob and Maggie, Baku, Swana and the little one...we'll be back xx

Owner's Response: The 4x4 is only for the adventurous who would enjoy exploring the many tracks that meander through the mountain reserve. Other than that we are at times visited by smart cars.

Even more than we could have wished for

Review Submitted: November 3, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Our stay at La Bolina has exceeded all our expectations (which were high after having selected it on the web site!). It really is a beautiful, unique and tranquil place where we found the inner rest we desperately needed.
The house and property feel and are very spacious, the interior and facilities are beautifully, artistically, yet simply designed without lacking any of the functionality desirable for a holiday stay. We felt wonderfully relieved of all the day-to-day clutter of modern lives without missing any of the comforts that made this holiday special.
All rooms felt airy, without being bare, comfortably cool without being cold. There are numerous special outside spaces (picnic corners, fire place, pool-side) that had their own special character so that we could chose where to have an early morning coffee or a pre-dinner drink. The views over the mountains, the nearby villages and to the mediterranean where never the same but always stunning. The combination of wide vistas and enough seclusion for privacy was perfect!
There is plenty to do and see within 30min to 1 hrs driving - if we had wanted to we could have ventured out much more...the 'problem' was, we just wanted to stay put - no need to go anywhere, as we had already arrived.
However, perhaps the single most special feature about La Bolina is the hospitality of its owners. We felt more than well taken care of, without ever feeling disturbed, and they made us welcome in a way that was truly unique. Their aura was the icing on the cake to our holiday. Thank you!

Breathtaking

Review Submitted: August 18, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
After my wife and I first spent a few incredibly enjoyable days at La Bolina in 2008, we decided to start a piggy bank, so keen were we to return to this idyllic little oasis. The piggy bank got spent on more mundane things, but we still went back this year, and it was no less enjoyable having been there before...in fact it was more so, because we knew that we didn't have to plan anything...with a cheap car hired and a quick pitstop at the supermercado, there was just 5 days of pure relaxation ahead. Simply watching the light and landscape change over the course of the day is entertainment enough. It's impossible not to let the worries of the day-to-day slip away, as you sit watching the sun set over the mountains and the lights of Frigiliana start to twinkle over the valley. The owners, Rob and Maggie, are incredibly friendly, warm and welcoming and truly seem to care for the people who come and stay up the hill from their own secluded spot. Thier personality is writ large on every detail of La Bolina, with Rob's beautiful sculptures, Maggie's striking paintings and an obvious artist's attention to detail that makes the place a truly beautifyl experience. There are things you can do, obviously, but for my wife and I, a cheap car and a boot full of food ready for the barbeque is more than enough...the magical atmosphere of La Bolina is the only recreation we've ever needed. And next year, the piggy bank is definitely only going to be spent on bringing our new baby along with us too.

A Mountain Paradise

Review Submitted: August 16, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Just returned from a week in this incredible place and wishing we could be back already! This really is the perfect property and location for couples looking for a villa holiday in Europe. The house is stylish, clean and extremely comfortable. The view is unbelievable, the pool, garden, barbecue and lounging areas were stunning and overall the property offered much more than the already impressive pictures promised.
The owners are welcoming and extremely hospitable but discreet and value your privacy during your stay.
A car is essential but you might not want to make much use of it as it would mean leaving the villa!
Overall, more than we could have hoped for, a great holiday in the perfect location, we can't wait to go back.

A long time searching and finally found!. La Bolina is the place for Two. Great views, clean house, excellent facilities, fantastic Pool, private -> No bothering by other people. The owners live close by but far enough. They know what hospitality means. Easy, silince, nature.
The art in and surrounding the house has a premier quality, gives you a luxery feeling. We can recommend it to everybody. If you look at the pictures: in real it's even better!

It should be 6 suitcases/stars.

Robert and Maggie, Thank you for this beautiful experience.
Hope to see you again at La Bolina

A real one-off

Kevin and Graeme Edinburgh, Scotland
Review Submitted: July 26, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
From the moment we arrived at this breathtaking location, we knew we had made the right chioce. We were looking for somewhere to chill out, with lazy days by the pool, nights by the bbq and the odd excursion to explore the surrounding towns and villages. It is a real unspoilt paradise, offering privacy and the chance to get away from the stresses and strains of home and work.
Rob and Maggie have created a real one-off with the care and attention they have lavished on their home and garden, from the infinity pool to the wonderful sculptures and artworks both inside and outside.
We are already planning a return visit.

The Perfect Getaway

Woody and Helen Manchester, UK
Review Submitted: May 29, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2008
My girlfriend and I spent two weeks in La Bolina and it was without question the the most beautiful, relaxing getaway that we could have imagined. To say it far exceeded our expectations is an understatement. After arriving in Malaga, a quick stop at the rental car garage and we were on our way. Our drive to Torrox was relaxing and straightforward, and only interrupted by a recommended stop at the large supermarket. We were then met by Rob in Torrox, who led us through the picturesque mountainside towards La Bolina. A final turn on the dusty dirt road brought the stunning villa into view.
First impressions of La Bolina make you realise you've found a real gem. White washed walls, incredible art, a stunning garden and breathtaking views. The villa was far more spacious than we anticipated, perfect for two people with everything you need. Once settled there is a host of things to do: trips to the caves of nerja, the beautiful frigilliana, nearby beaches (ideal for snorkelling), restaurants and shops, and of course BBQing and swimming in the garden!
Rob and Maggie were fantastic hosts and genuinely nice people. Always willing to help and advise on where to go and what to do. They are extremely friendly and welcoming and really put you at ease. What they have done with La Bolina and the garden is sensational and you are guarenteed to have the most incredible experience. My girlfriend and I now plan every holiday with the same feeling....it won't be the same as La Bolina!

La Bolina

Pat and Geoff Suffolk, England
Review Submitted: May 24, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
If you seek peace and quiet you will love ‘La Bolina’. Having stayed in this part of Andalucia on previous occasions, we were familiar with the area and had enjoyed visits to Frigiliana, Nerja and El Acebuchal. We were looking for somewhere quiet and secluded where we could relax and enjoy warmer weather than the UK usually offers in May.
The cortijo at La Bolina proved to be just what we had hoped for; a secluded hideaway, well off the beaten track, with spectacular views across to Frigiliana and down to Nerja and the Mediterranean
After grilled sardines and paella for lunch at Ayo’s at Burianna Beach, the garden at the cortijo with its pool and Rob’s fascinating sculptures, was the perfect place to be. We imagine that, in winter too, with olive-logs burning on the open fireplace and a glass or two of good Rioja, this would be a comfortable retreat.

La Bolina

Matt & Robyn London
Review Submitted: September 23, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Having spent ten days with my girlfriend at La Bolina, it is a bit of a shock to be back in the UK! We had a truly amazing stay at this villa, it really is the perfect mountain getaway; Rob and Maggie have made this property feel like it is your home from home, with their art work and sculptures in both home and garden complementing the white walls, grass lawn and cool water of the infinity pool.
The layout is quite adequate for a couple, with cooking area suitably equipped to cook paella when not using the BBQ area by the pool!
La Bolina is reflective of the owners home and the attention to detail is fantastic. There's no mints left by the pillows or folded corners on the loo role here, just a real sense that you are being a guest in someones own house, which has been kept clean and looked after for that special guest!
We enjoyed exploying the area surrounding the villa, with walks around Frigiliana and daytrips to Granada, rock climbing in El Chorro, swimming in the sea, and of course just reading by the pool before lighting the BBQ!
There are plenty of activites in the surrounding areas from horse riding to quad biking, although you could quite easily not actually leave this place for your whole stay if you wanted, it's that relaxing...

For when cooking became too much effort, a swift drive fifteen minutes up into the mountains took us to a wonderful restaurant set into the steep hill side. Again, one of the owners recommendations, giving the sense that we were gladly not just working our way through the lonely planet guidebook...

There is a flatscreen here with some DVDs should you need to switch off, as well as shelves and cupboards full of books, but if your looking to watch the TV or have a phone down to reception, your looking at the wrong place. If you are looking to stay in a perfect little villa with an inspirational surrounding, and a feeling that you've found a secret place on the map that not too many people know about, then this is perfect. Just don't tell too many people!
