The Gables - Porthleven

Flying Scots Inverness
Review Submitted: February 13, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2007
We stayed at the apartment last summer at the end of June 2007 for 3 weeks - finding the accommodation of a very high standard. All facilities and equipment were excellent and we particularly liked the fact that the owners were available if needed and very friendly but not imposing, even offering extra towels for our dog after long walks!!

As a base it was ideal and we liked the fact that the village was of a fair size allowing for a choice of restaurants and pubs. Being dog owners we liked the friendliness of the locals towards animals and appreciated many leaving out water for their use.

The fact that we travelled from the capital of the Highlands, it was so welcoming to come to such a lovely retreat. We were not disappointed after our long journey South.

If we were to return to the area we would have no hesitation in renting "The Gables". Should any friends venture to this part of the world we would recommend the property.

My husband and I recently spent a week at the Gables and were blessed with beautiful weather which made the experience verge on perfect. The Gables is fully equipped with everything you could need and is perfectly located for all amenities in the area. It is pretty much central to most tourist attraction in the area as well. The property was clean and well decorated, the owners both friendly and very helpful (check out the fabulous postcards that were done by Alison, they are fabulous) We ate at the Ship Inn (very nice) The Harbour (good) Moonflower (very good) and take aways which were both superb from Rolands Plaice and pizza from the Deli. Particular highlight of holiday for us was St Michaels Mount, it's worth the climb to the top.
Thank you for a wonderful holiday, we recommend this apartment
Owner's Response: So glad you had such a wonderful holiday. It's always great to get such positive feedback.

Great place to stay

The Gables is a lovely little apartment. It was very clean when we arrived and surprisingly for self catering accomodation had a significant amount of kitchen equipment meaning that you could eat comfortably in the apartment.

The owners were very helpful, informing us when they were away for a night and there to answer any queries we had without being in any way intrusive.

The property is a 2 minute walk from the post office and a maximum five minutes walk from the beautiful harbour. Portleven is a lovely little village - and we heartily recommend the pizzas from the Village deli - yum yum! The village is well situated with the likes of Penzance, St Ives, Lizard Point, Lands End & Falmouth all within 30 mins or so.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and if we return to the area (which is likely) our first port of call for accomodation will be the Gables.

lovely place, people with young children have to be careful not to make to much noise, they did not sound proof the floor when they turn the house into two flats. Or my grandson was to noisy. Very clean and cosy. No stairs or steps, that i can recall, right by the shops and harbour. the owner very friendly and helpful.
Owner's Response: The apartment is both fire-proofed and sound-proofed.

The Gables in Porthleven - a great place to go...

The Gables is very special! What a great place to go on holiday. The flat is in the middle of the village but nice and quiet. The Gables is one of the oldest houses in the village. Once you get used to the slightly wonky floors and the low headroom in places, you'll love the accommodation, everything you need. The kitchen is well appointed, big enough to cook a family-sized meal. Even the dog enjoys it. Nice and warm, even in late October/early November. I think we've been down four or five times in about five or six years. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.

It takes all of two minutes to get to the post office, three to the local chippy, five minutes to the harbour, the supermarket and the nearest pub. The beach is amazing, mile upon mile of brilliant sand. There are lots of local walks including a wooded National Trust estate with a unique land-locked estaury. Porthleven is well situated for touring around The Lizard and West Cornwall. Penzance is about 10 miles away. The North coast is about half an hour away. There are some amazing sub-tropical gardens hidden away in the back lanes between Helston and Falmouth. There are some great pubs, and most of them take dogs. The locals are friendly. The cafes and restaurants are reasonably priced and the food is outstanding. The local wet fish shop is nationally renowned. Then there's the bakers, the pizzeria...

We visit Porthleven every year

The apartment is basic but clean and an ideal base for a wonderful holiday in Cornwall. It is situated only a couple of minutes walk from harbour, shops, restaurants and about 5 to 10 minutes from the beach.
We are a family of 2 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs and apartment is plenty big enough to accommodate us. You would be comfortable with 4 adults or 2 adults and 3 children.
We don't eat out in the restaurants because of the dogs but we have eaten at the Atlantic Inn (which is our favourite pub) and Ship Inn which are both really nice.
We use the Chinese takeaway and also the Fish and Chip shop on Shute Lane has the nicest fish and chips I have ever tasted.
I would recommend this apartment to families with young children and families with a dog. You have to access the property by climbing some steps so it would be unsuitable for people with disabilities.
A car is not essential however I would strongly reccomend it.
