A Perfect Retreat

Nigel & Denise Swadlincote
Review Submitted: January 5, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
Marlowe Cottage in my opinion can only be described as perfect in every respect. It was immaculately clean, superbly furnished and very comfortable.
The attention to detail is incredible; ranging from fresh flowers around the house, a bowl of fresh fruits and a very nice 'welcome hamper'.
We ordered a meal from the 'drop-off' menu for our arrival which was excellent and very welcome after a long journey. We would highly recommend the food which we believe is home cooked by the owners.
The village of Calbeck is quiet and away from the 'commercialisation' of some of the Lakeland towns and villages but very pretty and friendly. There is good food and beer at the village pub, just short walk away. We didn't see much of the surrounding area, we were so comfortable where we were!
The owners are very helpful and accommodating and despite being 2 hours later than expected arriving they were there to greet us, with logs burning on the stove.
We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing break in luxurious surroundings. We have just booked another stay!

Words cannot describe - perfection!

I stayed at Marlowe Cottage at the end of May this year with my parents and boyfriend - it was my treat for my Mums 65th birthday. And as per the title above, words (or photos) cannot sufficiently convey how utterly gorgeous this place is! Jen, the owner, has decorated the place so that modern luxuries and conveniences blend perfectly with period charm to create a cosy and relaxing haven that is simply a delight to be in. We were only sad we didn't spend longer at the property itself! The afternoon tea and cake provided on arrival is delicious, as are the home-made meals from the delivery service; don't miss out on this! The garden also gets the sun from morning to evening and if you fancy cooking in there is a BBQ too. The location is also great; you are within walking distance of the extremely pretty village of Caldbeck (Mum fell in love!), and within an easy drive of some of the main lakes. We visited Derwentwater and Ullswater while we were there. All in all, an experience not to be missed, be quick before she realises and puts her prices up! :0)

Come rain or shine, this home from home will not disappoint. We endorse all the other reviews. Marlowe Cottage is an outstanding holiday rental. The surrounding area was new to us but we fell in love with it and will certainly be going back on a regular basis.

The cottage is marketed as 5* luxury and it doesn't disappoint. From the fresh flowers everywhere to the welcome hamper, complimentary toiletries and freshly baked cakes and scones - you really feel like you are enjoying the luxury of a 5* hotel with the convenince of self catering. The owners have thought of everything.
There is a bookshelf full of local information and books on walks and the Lake District. There are also a couple of folders - one with details about the cottage and local information - what to do on rainy days etc, and one with laminated sheets with walks around the area. There was even a selection of the latest DVD releases to go alongside the already comprehensive collection on offer.
The accommodation was immaculately clean and of top quality. Arrangements were made to collect the bedding and towels at the end of the first week and there were plenty of fresh towels and bedlinen available.
I have no hesitation in recommending the cottage. In fact, I was so impressed by the whole experience - service, accommodation, location etc. that I have pinned up the brochure on the noticeboard at work!

We have just returned from a weeks holiday staying at this wonderful cosy and welcoming cottage. It is furnished and maintained to a very high standard and everything you could wish for is there. The "welcome pack" was superb and all the little special touches make for a fabulous stay.
The owner also provides an evening menu service which is very highly recommended - the home cooked food is delicious, with huge portions! The local pub also has a good menu and is within easy walking distance.

It is away from the more touristy part of the Lakes which is just what we wanted and the local village is very quiet and peaceful. There are plenty of walks in this pretty area and we also took our bikes and didn't find the hills too daunting!

We highly recommend this cottage and are planning a return trip next year.

Marlowe Cottage

This cottage provided an ideal venue for meeting up with our family .... a half way point between the North of Scotland and the South of England!
This is a well equipped and well maintained cottage with lots of useful additions provided on request ... such as cot and high chair and even toys and books suitable for a 20 month old toddler.
We would recommend that you try Jen's home cooked food for at least one meal ... but don't choose the last evening of your stay ... there was such a sumptious spread, it was as well we had invited local friends who could use the leftovers!
A great place to stay in any weather.
