lisbon apartment

The apartment worked well for us -- two couples -- although the second bedroom was small and had bunkbeds. The rest of the apartment was generous in size, and having an outside space was a bonus. We found it took awhile for us to get our bearings and find where the stores, tram stops etc. were located, despite the many maps the owner Angelo left us. Angelo was extremely friendly and helpful, spoke English fluently, and was very welcoming. Once we found our way around a little, we discovered it was easy to get the tram downtown, get groceries etc. It would be a great apartment for a family, and the large terrace would provide safe outside space for children to play. The apartment is located in a very old part of the city, but the building itself is newer, the apartment was clean and the kitchen had all appliances (washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave etc). Make sure to purchase special bus pass that allows one to use all forms of public transit. Such freedom to be able to hop on a tram, bus, or metro easily....and the pass gives discounts or free entrances to many of the sights as well. Walk the little streets of the Alfama, find a Fado restaurant there for a special evening, go to Belem, visit the fabulous Aquarium, go to one of the several great viewpoints over the old city. We found that taking a sightseeing hop on/hop off bus trip was a good way to get a feel for the "lay of the land" and decide on what sights we were interested in seeing.
