A perfect retreat in Venice

We are a couple who stayed in Alice for 16 nights over Christmas and New Year and it was an excellent choice. The apartment is clean, modern, rather minimal but very warm and comfortable with lots of hot water, comfortable bed and plenty of storage. The situation, so close to San Marco means it is near just about anywhere you might want to walk to. The kitchen is certainly adequate but we did miss not having a toaster or microwave. As sterling had just plummeted we ate in more than we anticipated and found an excellent supermarket at Punto in nearby Calle San Lorenzo that had lots of interesting Christmas meats and treats - after Mass at San Marco we had boned duck and a beautiful pork joint covered in fruits and nuts. Possible activities we recommend are getting the boats to Torcello for a fish lunch at Villa 600, getting the train to Padua, Vicenza or Verona (very cheap and comfortable) and if staying for Christmas, go to all the free concerts in the churches. We also recommend getting a discounted travel pass online before you arrive from Hellovenezia that you can use for unlimited vaporetto trips. All our arrangements went perfectly, we were met at the vaporetto stop, the owner stopped by to check we were ok and we could leave late for our flight as no one was checking in the next day. I recommend this apartment thoroughly for the price, as if you can self cater it makes for a very comfortable and economic trip.
