Reefview in Cades Bay on Antigua
Review Submitted: December 30, 2008
Date of Stay: December 2008
We have traveled to several places. We find it an adventure to meet people from different cultures and experience the native areas. We stayed at the penthouse for 2 weeks. Most definitely, one needs a car to explore other parts of the island, however, driving on the left side and the steering wheel on the right side was an adventure in itself. We needed to be very careful of the potholes in the roads so the car rental did not get ruined. We saw mongoose, herons, stingrays, fig, (bananas) and several other birds and fish. The description of the house was accurate regarding the layout and facilities. One does not need AC as there seemed to be breezes most of the time. Things are quite expensive on the island so one might want to bring as many things to use for the stay as possible...hand soap, dish soap, even little shares of food if you are on a tight budget. Waking up to the sounds and calling of chickens, donkeys and dogs might bother some people, but we thought it part of the real Antigua. The house is close to others, however, that shows the native ambience of Antigua. It is near a resort where one can get food. This local community has one of the best places to buy rum in the Caribbean. The property was clean and well cared for by the owners. The owners take pride in keeping things running so visitors need to take care of the place as if it was their own. If one wants to just relax and have a beach all to themselves, this is the place. There is Wifi so if that is your thing, you will need a laptop. The owners were helpful, hard working, friendly, willing to talk about places to visit, and accommodating. One day, we even saw from our porch, Montserrat become active with it's volcano. We visited several beaches and hiked around many areas during the day. Staying at this place limits one for night activities such as dinner except you can eat with the owners for a charge ( quite delicious) or travel at night on the pesky roads to a restaurant. We enjoyed eating ourselves in the apartment some with supplies from Jolly Harbor grocery store. They have very good hamburger, fishburger, chicken burgers for take out. Valley Church Beach is a nice beach and eating at the Nest is a lovely experience. We enjoyed visiting Half Moon Bay, Harmony Hall, Shirley Heights ( a BBQ on Sunday night - local fun),English Harbor, and walking up a newly named Mountain Obama ( #1300 feet). Antigua is a place for relaxing, walking beaches and seeing the local flora and fauna.
