I've stayed at a number of French Alpine apartments in Chamonix, Tignes and Val D'Isere, in winter and in summer. This one has been the best by far. The description given by the owners is spot on.

It is modern, spotlessly clean, easily accessible by road, train and to the Les Houches lift system. The local train and bus network is very efficient, and means that it is possible to park the car in the garage and not use it until going home again. The apartment is amazingly well stocked - the kitchen has far more in than my kitchen at home!

Before going, I was in regular communication with Janet, who gave a level of information on the local walks and attractions that I suspect only the local Office De Tourism could beat (which is only a few hundred metres away from the apartment anyway!), and they wouldn't be able to give the personal recommendation that Janet did (recommendations that I can now say were well recommended, especially Le Lac Blanc walk).

Les Houches is nice village with astounding views of the Aguille Vert end of the Mont Blanc Massif, which can all be seen from the balconies of the apartment. The sunset on these mountains is really worth seeing. I didn't find any cafes or restaurants that I didn't like in the village, Chamonix or on the mounatinsides. All the people I met were friendly and willing to talk (although this may have been as excuse for a rest whilst walking!!).

As well as walking, I would recommend mountain biking (there are trails of all abilities and the lifts will take bikes up to the top no problem), rock climbing (I only went outdoors as the weather was so good, but the indoor place looked good on the brochure), wildlife spotting (get out on the first lift before there are many people around and walk the trails through the Aguilles Rouges reserve), experiencing the affects of altitude on the Midi, white water rafting through the middle of Chamonix town centre and just getting out to enjoy the fresh air and relaxed atmosphere of the Chamonix valley.

Would I recommend this apartment to a friend? Well, I would go back there, so I definitely would recommend it.

What a find - I searched the internet for British owned apartment in the Chamonix valley and came up trumps with this.Holiday was July 25th 09.....Sun,Sun,Sun
Not only would I recommend this apartment to a friend but I've already booked a return visit for ski season.
Apartment has exellent furnishings, cooking & laundry facilities. Two balconies made for views from all angles. Walking distance to restaurants & supermarket and ski lift is 150m. All the pre trip advice from owner re directions and things to do made for a summer activity holiday to remember. Top marks Janet & John - the neighbours and the people in Les Houches very welcolming too.

We have just returned from a weeks stay in Chalet Whymper (August 2009). This chalet is perfect, the listing description is very accurate and you will not be disappointed if you stay here. Its like having your own home from home in the mountains, its also perfectly located just a short walk away from both of the cable car lifts in Les Houches. Les Houches itself has some amazing scenary and fantastic walks and if you want explore the sights of Chamonix you can get there very easily and for free on local bus using the travel card which you will find in the chalet on arrival. We loved both les houches and chalet whymper and will definitely be back!

Super appartment

Puddle Jumper Scotland
Review Submitted: July 30, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The appartment is exactly as described in the advertisement. It has everything you could need and is very clean. The two balconies provide great views of the valley as well as opportunities to relax in the morning and late afternoon sun - fantastic after a long hard day! From initial contact to our return home Janet was very helpful - everything you could possibly need to know was provided. Would recommend to anyone - hoping to return ourselves soon!

Sun, snow & super appartment

Review Submitted: May 9, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We stayed in this appartment for 5 days in mid Apr. We arrived after an easy car journey from Calais (Les Houches is so simple to get to) to find a clean, modern, light appt. All furnishings are of a very high quality, lovely comfy sofas, TV / DVD's etc etc. If you weren't sure how to use something or where to find something just look in the folders - very comprehensive notes! There was plenty of space for the 4 of us to chill out - 2 adults, 2 children (14 & 12 years old) including lots of wardrobe & space for ski wear & equipment - often lacking in other ski appartments. It feels homely from the moment you walk through the door with all the equipment you need such as dishwasher & washing machine. It's in a great location with lovely restaurants, bar & super boulangerie just a few minutes walk of the appt. The local supermarket is well stocked with a great selection of good quality meat, good wine bargains plus anything else you need. We picked up a good deal at Cyprien Sports on our skis & were told that if we book online next time we could get 20 -30% discount. Despite arriving at the tail end of the season the skiing was great. We purchased the 'Red' route ski pass with access to Brevant, Grand Montets, Le Tour & Courmayeur (through the tunnel) conditions in the latter 3 resorts were really good & all had enough ski lifts open to keep us going ... with the added bonus of a midweek snowfall giving another 25 cm of soft covering, yipee! It was weird to be skiing during the day then sitting on the spacious appartment balcony in the evening watching the sun go down - winter & summer holiday all in one!. Can't recommend this appartment highly enough & we all can't wait to go back!

stayed at chalet whymper march 09 and i would recommend this apartment to everyone.its a modern well designed 1 bedroom apartment with everything you will need.the owner is very professional offering full instructions, handy tips and directions before your arrival so your arrival is completley hassle free.also full information and maps of the surrounding areas are stored in the apartment so you can get the most out of your holiday. situated less than 50 yards from the bellvue lift in les houches its location is prime for this ski resort and many great resorts in the surrounding area.the apartment offers its own garage so that rental is tucked away safe.sky tv,dvd, lcd tv,fully equipped kitchen with every utensil going, modern appliances, loads of storage.and the views from the balconies are breathtaking. the management company made sure it was immaculate on our arrival.the only problem is you have to leave at some point to return home.we had the most wonderful ski conditions the week we stayed and i cannot praise the full package of this apartment enough.

Chalet Whymper provides excellent, quiet accommodation in an ideal location. We had plenty room for 2 adults, a 14 y.o. and an 11 y.o. Good equipment thoughout, ski storage, SKY tv and a short walk to the lift, restaurants and the supermarket. In addition I have skied in Europe, the US and Canada and think that Les Houches is a great little ski resort particularly for mixed ability groups. Discount offered at local ski hire also. We will have no hesitation in staying here again.

Perfection in Les Houches!

Review Submitted: February 2, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
January 2009:

We have just returned from one week of skiing in beautiful Les Houches. Our stay at Chalet Whymper was perfect. The owners have thought of every minor detail which made our stay a home from home. The apartment is furnished to a very high standard with quality fittings and the double aspect views were amazing!

It is only a 2 minute walk to the Bellevue cable car or to a flight of steps to take the chair lift.

The skiing was fantastic, with plenty of variety from undulating blues for improvers to the white knuckle ride of the Kandahar for the brave! You'll never tire of the awesome sight of Mont Blanc and the jagged peaks towering over the Chamonix Valley.

The ESF ski school was great and we found that the locals were very friendly and helpful.

We are definitely returning next year for another ski trip and will probably return in August to experience summer in the Chamonix Valley - we can't wait!!

We could say so much more but we would rather keep this gem of a location as our own little secret......

Wymper Apartment

skiboy Scotland
Review Submitted: February 1, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
The owner provided a very good service right down to the last detail,
The apartment was very well equipped every thing you could possibly need, clean and high spec. close to the cable car.

Leave your car in the underground garage and use the local bus service.

Would highly recommend this apartment.

The Wymper apartment is what every holiday apartment should be.

A joy to go back to after a hard days skiing.
