Friar's Hill Guest House

Review Submitted: June 27, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
I just completed my 2nd week at the property since the end of April. It was perfect for my adult daughters and me. The couple who lives on the property seem like part of my family now.

I cannot think of one thing that we needed that was not provided either trip. It was the best value for my money on the island.

If you do not like to walk for about 30 minutes to the grocery store or the beach, then you may want to rent a car. We walked everywhere and rode the local bus to St John's.

I have already recommended the house to my daughter's friends at the American University of Antigua Medical School for their families when they come to visit.

Fantastic Holiday

Review Submitted: March 23, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2008
Myself my husband and 2 children aged 12 yrs and 1 yr stayed at Friars Hill Oct 08. The apartment was spotlesss, comfortable and had everything that you need, including a washing machine. The bedrooms are doubles and huge wardrobes and a/c. The island itself is georgeous and the beaches amazing, Long island was a favourite of ours as with children gentle waters and shade! the bar there sells great cocktails! I would also recommend the surf n turf at the waterfront which is near Sandals. We hired a car and drove around the Island which is a must and Shirley Heights is great! All in all we had a fantastic holiday and will be back again very soon, I would recommend this accomodation above any other!

The house is the best value on the island. This was my 2nd time staying there in 2 months. I have recommended it to several medical students for their parents book when they are visiting. The couple next door seem like family now!

My stay in Antigua

The house is about 15 to 20 minutes from the airport and a 30 to 45 minute walk from 2 beaches. There is shopping strip mall and large grocery store within walking distance and a local bus stop around the corner. It is a 10 minute ride to the capital, St. Johns. There is also a smaller grocery store just around the corner as well.

If you are not used to walking, you may want to rent a car. We enjoyed walking and riding the bus.

The landlords who live nextdoor were fabulous. We relied on them for directions and suggestions on where to go. They are a tremendous asset!!!

I am already planning another trip less than 2 months. The Friar's Hill house is the best value on the island.

Our Stay in Antigua

We spent two weeks in Antigua and would definitely recommend Friars Hill Cottage. It was outstanding value for money - clean, tastefully furnished and well equipped. We hired a car for the duration of the holiday which allowed us to see a lot of the island.

We ate at a number of quality hotels but I wouldn't swap our chosen accommodation for anything we saw! My only request would be more mirrors - there's only one small one in the bathroom. As two girls, we'd definitely have made use of a full length mirror! An additional key for the automatic gates would also have been helpful (especially when returning late at night) and would have allowed us to park on the drive. These are merely suggestions and the lack of either didn't detract from an excellent holiday.

Clovis and Dave were very welcoming and helpful, as were everyone we came across during the holiday. I'd definitely visit Antigua again and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. First rate accommodation!

Review of Friars Hill Cottage

This property is one of the cheapest available on the island and is excellent value for money. It is in excellent condition, being recently built, and is nicely finished off internally. The outside is more attractive than current photos show as a variety of plants have now been put in and will enhance the property as they mature. Everything was very clean. The verandah is spacious and there is a drying area out the back. The couple who live next door are, as others have said, welcoming and friendly. The villa is well situated for a number of beaches, bars and restaurants, St. John's, a coffee shop (at Jasmine Court) and supermarkets. We hired a car, which made trips to the other side of the island easily manageable. We did not see a music system. If that is important to you you would need to ask about it. Also, although there are plenty of saucepans for the burners there are no dishes for use in the oven. The area is a pleasant residential area; the old oil storage tanks (or whatever they are) that can be seen on google earth, although close, are largely hidden by trees.

Be a tourist and live like a local

We stayed at the cottage for 2 weeks and we were so impressed that we have booked a further 2 weeks in September 2008. The Cottage is located 5 minutes from Woods Mall and 10 minutes from Dickenson Bay beach and 10 minutes from St John by car but also walkable if taken leisurely - great way to top up your tan! A car is useful for getting around quickly but you can have just as much fun using the buses.

The cottage is well laid out with 2 large bedrooms and a well presented kitchen. The Wifi works a treat but for the best reception I would suggest the front bedroom. For the price and where it is situated I would highly recommend it.

Caribbean sun and smiles! We stayed here for 2 weeks and wished we could have stayed longer. Very clean, well put together, comfortable house. Lovely family next door to help out with anything you need. Car a must if you don't want to walk long distances but only a short drive to everything you need - supermarkets, stunning beaches and nightlife. Wireless internet access, cable tv and a bbq if you want to relax in on the porch. Great restaurants and bars nearby if you don't. We highly recommend this property and would go back in a second.

Wonderful House and Owners...

Review Submitted: January 9, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
My father, brother and myself stayed at this little home in antigua over the recent holidays. The house was just built and next to it is another small home where the owners live, a wonderful antiguan couple. Being a new house there were a couple loose ends to sort out (a leaky faucet and such) and the two owners immediately had the contractor and plumber come to replace the faucet. The house is a five minute drive to the beach, five minute drive to town and a five minute drive to a large supermarket. There is also a smaller supermarket a five minute walk away. The shower had excellent water pressure hot water and the kitchen is nice and full of pots and pans, plate and bowls. The television has heaps of channels. This home also has a great porch for sitting in the morning, the internet is wireless and you can get it from the porch although a wi-fi extender will be installed soon and should allow you access from inside the house in the near future. This is a great home for a small family, or two couples. There is two queen size beds in two rooms, a small living room with couch and an open kitchen in the living room. There is a table on the porch with four chairs., great for dinner outside, the porch is covered so if it rains all is cool. Restaurants are a short drive away in all directions, but we did heaps of cooking. We didn't have a car and walked all over the place! This is one of the best deals on the island!
