Holiday Home Heaven

Review Submitted: October 22, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
A lovely French house, with all the facilities of a home from home.Attractive, well-maintained, wholesome and clean, with a very efficient service provided by the owner. The setting was a charming, tranquil village, with beautiful surrounding countryside. Further afield are many interesting towns and facilities, and good access from UK would make this suitable for a short break or long stay. . . . . .my ideal heaven!

A Perfect Holiday Break

Peter&Heather Beverley
Review Submitted: June 29, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We are currently awaiting our third stay at Dickie and Barbara's country cottage. All dealings with Dickie and Barbara have been most pleasant and helpful.

When we arrived, first time as a party of three and second time as a party of four, we immediately felt at home in the spacious accommodation: plenty of rooms to choose from for sleeping arrangements, and our son, who uses a wheelchair managed very well downstairs with fairly easy access to the shower room and toilet. Our teenage daughter thought the cottage was brilliant, and she is not that easy to please.

While the accommodation is quaint and roomy with the main living area heavily beamed with heavy lush curtaining and comfortable furniture, the village itself is also charming and we visited the excellent restaurant (Le Secret Garden) several times. People are friendly and access to the coast, Montreul or Hesdin for shopping, is easy by the main roads which provide access.

Even when staying-in, there is a collection of DVDs and books (in English) and the garden is fine for that
obligatory barbeque. Indeed we enjoyed a bottle or two of local wine over the spacious dining table when not venturing out-doors, so if you like to take it easy, not doing much at all, like the French countryside and people, or would rather visits to the seaside, meeting locals or investigating various tourist attractions, then this is a venue that is hard to beat.

We have been holidaying in gites for 20 plus years now, so we are pleased to make this a most highly recommended holiday cottage: you will not be disappointed.

June 2009

We had a wonderful time in this lovely house.
A gorgeous sunny garden - peaceful and private.
The house itself was clean, comfortable and very well equipped - we wanted for nothing.
The village of Fressin has the ruins of the castle - out the front door and turn left - it is just a few minutes walk.
We had several days out, all within an hour of the house - Le Touquet for the beach, St Valery for the Sunday market and the little shops and restaurants, Amiens - a must. Great shopping and enough touristy bits to keep everyone happy.
We have been to this house before and have already booked again for later this year.

Great accommodation, great setting

Review Submitted: December 5, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
Our family lives close by and we needed a convenient location to visit with our pet dog Parker. The accommodation is very spacious, well-appointed, very clean and very comfortable. Fressin is a beautiful location, with plenty of walks nearby with stunning views across the valley. The chateau in the village is an interesting place to visit, there is a great market in Hesdin on Thursdays and it's only an hour drive to the coast. The new restaurant - Secret Garden - is a short walk away and the hosts are extremely friendly. We are both vegetarian and they made a great effort to accommodate us, cooking a special meal.

We would highly recommend this cottage for anyone looking for a relaxing break in France.

Dickie and Barbara were extremely friendly and helpful.

Thank you for a great holiday, we will come again!

Owner's Response: After a couple of visits to the nearby re-opened restaurant, the 'Secret Garden', we can heartily recommend the place. Vincent, the genial chef, and his wife both speak some English, so the mysteries of the menu can be explained to non-French speakers.
Menus start from around €12 lunch, €15 dinner and wine from €12 a bottle.

Such an interesting place!

The cottage is faultless - plenty of space, excellently furnished and equipped. We visited late October, but found heating no problem with the mobile & fitted heaters. Our son was particularly taken with the large collection of videos and DVDs - we had to drag him away from the TV!

We had a problem with a missing key on arrival. Dickie, Barbara and their local friends moved heaven and earth to sort it out for us - really great customer service.

Fressin is the former home of Georges Bernanos (a famous French author & priest), and there is a lot of interesting memorabillia around the village about him; even the cycle tracks are named after his books! The church and former chateau are well worth a visit; as are the neighbouring towns of Hesdin and Fruges, both having a lot of interest.

Owner's Response: We're only too pleased that we were able to resolve the missing back-door key so quickly. It helps that we have kindly neighbours in the village.

Idyllic Fressin

Anubis Stevenage, Herts
Review Submitted: September 14, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
The cottage had more than enough amenities, from cookware to cleaning items and the drawer of tourist information was very useful.
There is more than enough sleeping room, and loads of room down stairs as well, allowing you not to feel cooped up in a small area like some rented accommodations, especially when there is a group of you.

We thoroughly enjoyed the sights in the area and around and would strongly suggest a visit down the road, opposite the church, to a lovely restaurant called the Secret Garden, the menu is small but the food makes up for that. Also a must visit if you are a chocoholic would be to the chocolate shop/factory, les chocolats de Beussant.

Owner's Response: A great bar/restaurant just 200 yards away makes all the difference to a holiday. We like it too !

The cottage was very easy to find, with your directions. It was an adylic cottage and very homely, everything that you could want was there. The area was very quiet and peaceful. The winery was interesting, and we came away with several bottles of red! We visited several markets in the area and local towns. The weather was red hot, so we were very lucky, an added bonus you might say. I would definately recommend this property to families and couples. We shall certainly be booking again this year.

Owner's Response: The huge wine-shop is a must - and the weather is usually a tad better than the English south coast. We're glad you enjoyed your holiday - Do come again.

The cottage was all we desired and more. A lovely, peaceful location, a pleasant restaurant/bar close by and more than enough to see and do in the nearby villages as well as further afield. Our only regret is that we were there for far to short a visit.

A lovely time

Review Submitted: June 1, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
We (2 adults, 3 children aged 13, 5 and 2) had a great stay in the cottage. The accommodation itself was lovely, well equipped (TV and DVD player was useful as our French is very limited) with a very spacious open plan living area. The only thing to be wary of, if travelling with young children is that the stairs are a little steep although our 2 and 5 year olds managed them ok. It was cold when we were there in April, but there were plenty of gas and electric heaters that kept the areas in use warm.

It is pretty rural, and a car is essential. We visited Agincourt (very close), Dunkirk (don't forget your passports if you want to cross the border to Belgium! - we forgot ours and didn't want to risk it.), Le Touquet - a very beautiful and upmarket seaside resort. There are the remains of a castle within walking distance and we spent a pleasant few hours exploring there - they have a quiz/treasure hunt for the kids which guides you around the site and keeps them interested. We also spent a lovely day at Dennyls Parc, a small theme park closeby. We sailed to Boulogne and visited Nausicaa, an aquarium close to the port, on our way back to the UK - well worth a visit.

We did not see any shops within walking distance/closeby, so make sure you stock up when out travelling. We tended to drive into Hesdin to use a small but well stocked supermarket.

Dickie and Barbara were very helpful, especially as we booked at the last minute. The instructions and directions given are very comprehensive. The deposit was returned promptly.

All in all we had a lovely relaxing time and enjoyed our first stay in France as a family.

Owner's Response: We'll make a note of mentioning the 'very French' stairs. Thanks for your comments.
