A great apartment in Funchal

Review Submitted: December 2, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
The apartment was lovely: sparkling clean, perfectly adequate facilities and modern, good quality furnishings. Full size kitchen meant we could eat in most nights. The balcony, to echo what previous reviewers have said, was a little on the small side, especially for those with vertigo, but thereagain, more than adequate for two people. We did enjoy watching the cruise liners coming and going from the balcony! The climb up the hill from the town was good excercise, but no problem if you have average fitness levels.
Claudio's representative was very helpful and welcoming on our arrival and gave us some local information.
Forget about the expensive pre-arranged tours and sightseeing trips - we made good use of the local service buses. You can get a ticket which can be topped up with the amount of journeys you wish to make. You can get information from this from the official Tourist Information office near the cathedral (beware the many others who are just commercial ones hoping to sell expensive tours), The bus journeys are so much more intersting and you get to meet the local people. All busses depart from the promenade area, there are different companies serving different parts of the areas. Some of the journeys are a bit of a white knuckle ride around hairpin bends but we felt completely safe! We did a long lavada walk between Palheiro Ferreiro gardens (disapointing) and Monte - this was a great walk with views and delightful tea garden on the way. We also wenet up to Eiro do Serrado and walked the nun's path to Curral das Freiras which was another lovely walk, these were all by public buses. But the highlight of our bus travels was catching the service bus to the far north west at Porto Moniz which was a 3 +hour trip each way, but included two stops for refreshements each way. It cost a fantastic 4.80 euros each! The driver was great and slowed down at viewpoints for us to take in the breathtaking coastal scenery - this is a must if (when!) we visit again.
We can thouroughly recomend this apartment and would visit again.

This apartment is just as described, very clean and comfortable with everything you could need for a holiday, with a lovely pool to cool off in after a day out and about. Claudio was very considerate with our holiday arrangements and his representative who met us at the apartment was very helpful. There are plenty of places to eat out at in the marina or the old town which are both within walking distance from the apartment. There is a small shop with essentials near by or a much bigger supermarket in Funchal. We went on the cable car to see the tropical gardens at Monte also we took a bus to see the botanical gadens, both are worth a visit.
We would recommend this apartment and would stay here again if we go back to Madeira.

One week in June

Friends recommended this apartment to us, and we knew as soon as we opened the door we had made the right decision. We arrived earlier than expected, but were met at the gates within minutes by Claudio's representative on the island. The apartment is extremely well equipped, clean, comfortable and modern. There are ample spare towels and bedding if needed. Although it has a central location, the apartment was very quiet, and most days we had the pool to ourselves. The bacony is small but OK for two, and has a lovely view across to the sea. Ideal for an evening glass of wine!

The Dolce Vita shopping centre is about a 10 minute walk away, with a well stocked and reasonably priced supermarket, though it is a bit of a trek coming back up the hill! The marina is nearby and there are a number of restaurants near the waterfront. We went a couple of time to 'FX' and both times the food was lovely and not too expensive.

We booked 3 trips, a west island tour, an east island tour and a lavada walk (moderate difficulty) all of which were good value. We walked to the Botanical Gardens, which was quite a steep walk - so be prepared!

We would certainly recommend the apartment to family and friends and will be visiting again.

Comfortable & Modern Apartment

We were greeted and shown around the apartment as soon as we arrived outside Palms Palace. The apartment is very near to the Casino and a lovely park and is a short walk from the avenida do mar (promenade). There is a large, well equipped supermarket 10 mins away but the walk back is uphill so dont buy too many heavy things from here! There is a smaller supermarket nearby too which does not involve an uphill walk so heavy items can be bought from here. The tourist information is at the bottom of Rua De Jasmineiro and you can purchase tickets for all the island tours and boat trips here at similar rates to everywhere else. Though beautiful and unique, Funchal is still a large city so if you don't like city breaks, you need to choose an apartment outside of Funchal. Our only negative about this holiday is that we would not necessarily choose a self catering holiday in the future as we didn't find it as relaxing as being in a hotel where everything such as food and room cleaning is included in the price and thus requires little effort or thought. But maybe we just like to be lazy when we're on holiday!
The apartment itself was clean, modern and well equipped although there was no DVD player which we did miss on the few nights that we stayed in for a few beers - however we ended up becoming great fans of the Extreme Sports channel on the TV because there are some amazing things on there.
Things I would recommend to do -
1) West and East Island Tours on mini bus,
2) "Sea the Best" Catamaran trip to see the Dolphins and Whales (this was well worth the money and 1 of the highlights of our trip),
3) "O Tapassol" Restaurant in the old end of Funchal,
4) The Red sight seeing bus around Funchal - Get off at stop 15 or 16 and walk down to Praia Formosa and along the sea past the lidos back towards Funchal as this is a wonderful walk with many nice restaurants.

2 weeks in May

The apartment in Funchal was excellent and extremely well equipped. There was ample spare towels and bedding if required. Although there is a slight climb to the apartment we didn't find this a problem and it it only about a 5 min walk to the marina. We were met at the apartment with the keys and given a mobile number to ring in case we had any problems. We found the property was very convenient for walking into the old town and the harbour where there were plenty of nice restaurants and bars. We booked 3 trips which were all very good value, but would advise anyone not to book where time share is promoted. Although they seem to offer very good deals you can get them just as cheap if you look around. The cable car is well worth a trip on! we didn't do the toboggan as it seemed very expensive for the time you were on ijt. We would definately recommend the apartment to family and friends and would love to visit at Christmas time.

We couldn't disagree in the least with the description of the apartment as "stunning" and "in an ideal location". The location was a real bonus with an easy walk through a park into the town.

We have just returned from a stay in this apartment and would agree wholeheartedly with the previous reviews. It is well positioned, well-equipped and well maintained.
Although the balcony is small it catches the afternoon and evening sun and is a good place to relax.
Claudio was very efficient in all his dealings with us and we reckoned the apartment was great value for money. We enjoyed our stay there very much.

Great base in Funchal

We loved staying at Claudio's Funchal apartment as it was in an ideal location for accessing the town for cafes and restaurants. It was also great for getting buses to the start of levada walks and trips to other parts of the island.

The apartment was well layed out and had everything you could want for a comfortable stay. It was clean and well maintained. Claudio was great to deal with and everything went extremely smoothly from our first contact to the last.

We would definitely recommend this apartment to friends who like to walk - it must be one of the best places in the world for walking with the most HUGE views you can imagine. The walk from the Baia de Abra car park to the tip of the headland and back (3 hours) is a must!

We loved Madeira and Claudio's apartment.

Classy apartment

Als of Cardiff Cardiff, UK
Review Submitted: November 13, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Property is finely appointed and decorated to a high standard. All amenities are there, and it's an easy walk to Funchal centre - or indeed local shops and restaurants.
The balcony is a bit on the small side, and overlooks adjacent properties... but you can see the sea in the middle distance.
We were welcomed at the complex's gates - even though we'd arrived somewhat earlier than expected, and duly provided with all the information we needed. Arrangements and customer service were faultless throughout.
All in all we had a very pleasant week, which is a tribute both to this apartment and the welcome of Madeira
