Canadian Review of Conte Ruggero

Eville Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Review Submitted: October 24, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Casa Vacanza Conte Ruggero, is a splendid structure with a lot of very interesting and fine architectural details that, as we said to the owners, it belongs more in the South of France or, going closer, on the slopes of Taormina. There are many things to say about this house: the beautiful garden, the great terraces, the great view of Mt.Etna from the top of the building, etc. The hosts without any doubt make the whole experience a positive one; a mixture of oriental demeanor (Maria is from the Philippines, with their known graciousness and hospitality) and the Mediterranean flair of her husband, Agostino, is proper and serious but warm at heart. To top it off, their grown up children, Sabrina a very bubbly and giggling girl and Marco a guy always ready to help to make your stay as good as possible, every time done with honesty, a smile, good will and like his father, good heart.
~Regardless that it is not in the South of France nor Taormina, the property is well located for one to easily reach the road to Mt.Etna, Catania, Syracuse, Giardini and Taormina!! Of course prudence is recommended when driving on any road that has to go through a town to get to the main roads or autostrada. The highways in Sicily are superb, really second to none but the ones just mentioned are a different story. Sicilian drivers have their own rules and the one who gets there first, goes first!! But those Sicilians you might find walking on the street beside you, be it in such places as Catania, Syracuse or Mascali, are amongst the most friendly, helpful and good natured people you would ever encounter. It is quite natural for them to go out of their way to help you find yours!!
~The reader of this report might wonder if it is true that everything is so perfect. Nothing in life is; there were a few minor deficiencies, easy to correct and I’m sure Maria, a savvy and very clever woman will take charge and figure it out on her own. Be sure that the whole family
will always be there for you to have a great time with as few problems as possible.
~What you have read was, more or less what we experienced, once you’re there you will have your own ones. Maybe better, maybe worse, but for sure different!
~To our hosts thank you for so many things!! The Arancinis, the peaches, the local wine, the sparkling wines, etc. and for trying to make us feel welcome every day of our stay! For that special connection I will remember this trip forever! Arrivederci e a presto!!

Autumn in Sicily

Etna-bound France
Review Submitted: October 22, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Spacious apartment, newly renovated to high standard, very clean and well-maintained with large balcony. Fast internet connection. Extremely friendly, helpful owner. Good location for exploring Etna, Syracuse, Catania, Taorima, and environs. Note, the apartment is in town, Mascali itself is not pretty and there is quite a bit of traffic. Good place for a family needing good space and a base from which to visit the area.

Our Sicilian experience

Review Submitted: September 8, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We had a terrific holiday and climbing Mount Etna was amongst the highlights. Maria and her family could not have been more welcoming and ensured that we felt at home. The accommodation in the villa is spacious, with well appointed facilities. The air conditioning was most welcome as we had very hot weather throughout our stay. The large veranda was an additional bonus and allowed us to dine out in the evening. Mascali is a working town so be prepared for the real Sicily with church bells and early morning traffic. With a bit of investigating the town offers some fine clothes shops and an excellent ice-cream parlour. Mascali is a short car journey to Taormina, with its magnificent Greek amphitheatre and Acireale with its Barogue churches. If you want a bit of local colour you must have a ‘Sicilian Pizza’ in Zafferanna, a pretty town half way up to Etna.
Many thanks to Maria, Agostino and their family for a wonderful holiday!

Great Apartment

Review Submitted: August 18, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We stayed for one week in the terraces apartment and it was great, the house is in a very good shape and is very clean and comfortable.
The owner of the place, Maria, together with her family met us with a very warm welcome and helped us in everything.
The house is located in a very good place in town, a few meters from the center and around 2km from the beach. The town itself is located in a very good place, near Catania and Messina, and very close to Etna. The place is very quite and well kept. I would say this is the best place in the town and it's location is very comfortable, the hosts are very nice and warm people, and we had a great time.
We very enjoyed our stay and if we will be in Mascali again, we will stay there again.
Thank you Maria and her family, we're very glad that we stayed in your apartment, and we will recommend it to who will fly to Sicily.
I wish you only the best,
Alex.

We spent a week in this holiday house. We were six adults and two small children. We have an awesome impression about the house and the owner. The booking went smoothly and she treated everything confidentially.

When we arrived there, everything was clean and neat. A friendly welcome surprise was waiting for our arrival in the fridge, which we appreciated very much.

The district is proportionally quiet and the garden is perfect for socialising. Mascali is in a good location in Sicily because it spreads between Catania and Messina. I would recommend the beach of Giardini Naxos, for families who have children, because the waves are not so high and nevertheless, the beach is sandy. Furthermore, If you are there, it is worth to visit the Morgan's Pub on the Via Recanati, at Giardini Naxos. They are simply the Kings of Gastronomy in Sicily.

I would recommend this holiday house to anyone who is considering to visit Sicily. Far better than a hotel. It has all the necessary facilities and comfort, in my opinion.

Best regards,
Jozsef from Hungary, Jászapáti

July in Sicily

Teds Ringwood, UK
Review Submitted: July 11, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Have just returned from a relaxing week in this lovely 1st floor apartment. It is well furnished & we were very comfortable (& grateful for the air conditioned bedrooms as the temperatures never dipped below 30 degrees even at night). The apartment has everything a family could need & is only minutes from a selection of wide local beaches, restaurants & supermarkets for provisions. The terrace has sun & shade at all times & has lighting so is still useable at night . It is in a residential district & we were soon greeting the neighbours with friendly nods & waves. You will need a car though & be prepared for the Sicilians driving style - definately from the 'he who dares, wins' variety!
Maria, our hostess was really helpful & kept us supplied with sight seeing information, tips & fresh fruit! There was also a welcome pack of beer & sparkling wine in the fridge - most appreciated.
I felt that the owners here really did put themselves out to ensure we enjoyed our week & would certainly come here again if we were returning to Sicily.

Owner's Response: I have taken into consideration that most of our guests come from temperate countries. The air-conditioning units in the bedrooms and the shades out in the terraces are the latest improvements for their comfort. However, since this building dates way back to the 1930s the thick walls are already excellent insulators against exterior temperature.Consequently, even just keeping a door or a window open would gently ventilate the environment. At the same time the doors and windows have all been renovated with double glass. By the way, the air –con units are two-way, ideal also as heaters.

Great Casa Vacanza

Review Submitted: June 30, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We very much enjoyed our stay in Casa Vacanza. The house is in a very good shape, clean and roomy. It is located in the small non-touristic town Mascali. It is an ideal place for sightseeing (Taormina, Catania, Ethna) and swimming as the next beach is just 2 km away. Maria, the landlord, was very nice and helpful. And if you get a chance, check out the panorama view on top of the roof where you can see the Ethna, Taormina and the sea!

Vacation at Casavacanza Conte Ruggero

Ellen - Traveller Richmond, VA USA
Review Submitted: June 23, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Charlie and I had a wonderful experience at Casavacanza Conte Ruggero. The apartment is newly renovated, filled with light, clean, well decorated, good kitchen with a large inviting terrace. The description regarding the location and facilities was accurate. There is a grocery store near-by which made it possible for us to prepare our meals in the very adequate kitchen. The owners bent over backwards to make us comfortable. The location in Mascali made it possible for us to walk about the town and visit the duomo.

We enjoyed eating all our meals on the terrace. There seemed to always be some kind of activity to be viewed from the terrace. We heard and saw the traveling market, the marching band, the church bells calling us to worship and the first communion children processing down the street to the duomo. We watched a family moving from their apartment and enjoyed waving good morning to the man across the street.

We had a perfect day in Taormina, visiting the town itself and walking all through and around the Roman Theatre. We also had a good day in Noto, a lovely town. We had packed a picnic lunch that day and ate in the public park. We also spend the day at the Syrcusa ruins. We had a time trying to get tickets. The people there were not very helpful. I advise before one goes there to look up on the internet where to buy the tickets. The ticket booth is not at the site itself but across the street past many, many shops.

We had a wonderful time in Mascali. Maria and Agustino were perfect hosts. I would advise anyone to stay there at their clean and well cared for home.

Owner's Response: It is always a joy for me to see how I have pleased my guests at my holiday home, Casa Vacanza Conte Ruggero located in this friendly town of Mascali, Catania.Regarding the trying time one may go through as looking for the ticket booth to see the Siracusa ruins could happen due to the language barrier.Yes, I would advise checking on Internet beforehand.I will be more than happy to help my guests to be informed regarding tickets, sightseeing, or whatever they wish to do through my PC. This will certainly save them a lot of trouble and of course, their precious time. This way my guests will be assured of a happy Sicilian vacation. Thanks once more for choosing my holiday home.Best regards,Maria

We stayed during the hot summer of 2008. The owners of apartment could not be more helpful or friendly, they were wonderful. The accommodation is large and clean with lovely original features. Mascali is a working town but only a few km from an extensive beach much loved by the locals. After negotiating the interesting driving habits of the Sicilians the apartment does make a good base for seeing the east of the Island. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the apartment to young families our want a taste of the 'real' Sicily rather than the tourist complexes. We shall never forget our first view of Mr Etna from the rooftop of the building.

Owner's Response: Sicily can boast of its pleasant weather all year round. However, during the peak season, August, it can get rather warm, but anytime would still be a good time to come and visit the island.Yes, our apartment is situated in a friendly town which gives our guests an opportunity to get familiar with the Sicilians and their way of life. It pleases us immensely when our guests plan on a return trip to our apartments. Now,I would like to take this chance to thank our dear guests for choosing us, Casa Vacanza Conte Ruggero in Mascali, Catania.

Review Submitted: September 9, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We went to stay in this house in august and we are planning again to go in winter. I would recommended it very much because it is clean, nice, and has all the facilities like home. We were 7 adults and 1 child and we stayed very comfortable. I would recommended this house for everyone. When you book a holiday, the major part of the holiday is were you are going to stay, this is excellent. and of course, the owners are very nice and helpful.
Thanks a lot,
Alison
