Villa Hannah, Panos Stalos, Crete

If you're looking for paradise, look no further! Our week at Villa Hannah was wonderful. From the directions we received to get from Heraklion Airport to the welcome and homeliness of the villa, the beautifully maintained garden and the fridge full of essentials when we arrived at 02:30. We could fault nothing.
David, the owner, was a helpful host, pointing out local tavernas, shops, beaches and places of interest. He was on hand if anything went wrong and has a programme of improvements, based on client feedback.
The views are stunning, the setting tranquil and quiet and the facilities more than adequate. A broken air-conditioner in the lounge was the only slight problem. Unfortunately, it was the engineer who was delaying its fixing, not the owners. (This is Greece, remember!) However, the altitude of the villa meant a good breeze was always on hand and by opening two sets of doors, the problem was greatly reduced. All the other air-conditioners worked perfectly.
The local taverna in the village square came highly recommended and proved both very reasonable and excellent. Those nearer the main road alongside the beach were either more expensive (but still cheap compared to the UK) or not so good in quality.
Little extras, such as providing separate towels for use at the pool, made a real difference, as well as a complete change of bedding and bath towels mid-week.
A week did not allow us to explore as much as we wanted, but the proximity of the national highway a mile away made it easy to get around the NW part of the island. Chania was hot and crowded so we only went once; the local beach was OK for swimming and snorkelling with cafes and swimming pools (free) for use by customers; Phalasarna on the westerly peninsula (45-60 mins) was the perfect beach. Stunning, turquoise waters, white and pink sand, safe, clear sea, ideal for snorkelling. It has several beach cafes, but lacks decent loos and there's not much shade when it's 40 degrees! The waterpark off the Omalos road was very expensive to get in and eating was too, but the shop just inside the main entrance was reasonable and the facilities were clean and good.
A car is necessary, unless you're into walking a lot. Beware the Greeks' driving, 2nd only to India in the no rules game and very scary until you get used to it! We'll consider coming here again, as it was great for our large family and excellent value for money.
Thank you David and Sandra!
