What a view

What a landscape! Mesmerizing. Could look at it for ever. Even our know-it-all son was impressed. The accommodation was very comfortable and we even cooked dinner a few evenings in the excellent kitchen. We enjoyed shopping for the freshest vegetables ever from our neighbours on Via Roma. And we tried out some of the recipes we learned during our one-day cooking course organised for us by Becky in the local My Italian Job travel agency. The miles of beaches on the Ionian coast were almost empty with long stretches of light golden sand and clear blue water. We checked out some of the other towns around too including Matera and spend a day in nearby Puglia with its trade-mark trulli. The roads are good and almost traffic-free. As Ann said the people in Irsina were friendly and helpful and she provided us with lots of useful material. We can see ourselves returning. Pia and Gerry.

Owner's Response: So happy you relished what Irsina and the region has to offer as we do. We look forward to seeing you again when we hope to have even more to offer.

All the amenities

Meems Norwalk, CT, USA
Review Submitted: October 27, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
In 30 years of traveling abroad it's difficult to find an accommodation that has it all: strong, hot showers, plush full-sized bath towels, great mattress, modern amenities and attractive decor...PLUS two views off the lovely balconies. This villa is the oasis in that desert of 'lacking' accommodations.

The owner has it equipped with everything a traveler could need...from toothbrush and soaps, shampoos...to local bread from the bakery a few steps away. A small mercato and a wonderful restaurant, La Contessa, are just steps away, too. Plus, an excellent travel agency, My Italian Job, is within walking distance (a longer hike, though) and Becky (a friendly British woman) can help you with all your questions.

The villa is a great location for visiting Matera (home of the Sassi caves and Mel Gibson's The Passion) and even the beaches near Metaponto (just over an hour away). I'd advise visiting when the weather is warm. There's a fantastic terrace patio overlooking the ancient tile roofs that would be a wonderful place for breakfast or dinner, weather permitting.

I'd go back in a heartbeat!

This is our 2nd time staying at this beautiful villa in Irsina. The location of the house is perfect, just 1 minute walk to the square where you can relax for a coffee or have a traditional italian lunch in one of the rustic restaurants. There is stunning views from the terrace, and each room of the house is really spacious with high ceilings.
The house is really well presented, it has all the nesscessary equipment which made our stay really comfortable and relaxing. The kitchen was perfect and we enjoyed a lot of home cooking during our stay, we had all the necessary utensils and great space to prepare and enjoy an evening meal at home. There is a lot to see and do around Basilicata, and your file of information give us some good ideas for day trips for example to the local farmhouses, to use the pool & tennis court facilities and for traditional lunch. I would highly recommend this house to anyone planning a trip to Irsina. For us it was perfect, it was like home to home.

Lovely ancient hill town

The apartment has everything you could possibly wish for and it is in absolutely pristine condition. We had no problems parking and the locals were always friendly, helpful and welcoming. There are many towns and villages nearby to explore, notably Matera and Genzano, and we were intrigued to find abandoned, deserted dwellings dotted in the hills.
The views from the apartment are sensational (when the weather clears!)
We would recommend this to anyone wanting a quiet, restful location in the heart of rural Italy.

S Eufemia fete

S Eufemia Charleroi
Review Submitted: February 23, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
We loved the house and all we read in the site was just right, marvellous views, delicious fresh food, friendly people. Everything we needed to know before we go we got all details from Ann, very quick and easy to understand. But the most big and best surprise was the fete of S Eufemia. The town and the people celebrate for three days. We were very happy to be there to take part too. The town was full of a lot of people and concerts and fireworks. But still our house was peaceful at night. We visit lots of little towns too and Matera we had heard a lot about and we were not disappointed. We want to go back to see more soon. We really love our holiday there. We remember it all when we visit the Louvre in Paris after Christmas when the superb S Eufemia statue by Mantegna visit all the way from the Cathedral in Irsina.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed the festival - it is one of several in the town each year and every town has their own, all with different traditions that must go back for hundreds of years. Irsina is justifiably proud of its Mantegna and its other wonderful works of art. Thank you for staying and we look forward to seeing you again.

Perfect holiday

Sandy & Jill London
Review Submitted: February 21, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
It was so good to get away from the bustling London scene. We loved the terrace, sipping proper coffee and eating breakfast fresh from the bakery two doors down. The view was hypnotic - we felt we could have spent our lives just looking at it. The house is very comfortable and clean, well fitted out with everything we could need including toiletries, books, DVDs - and a very welcome bottle of proseco. The advance information we got was excellent and Ann answered all our queries by return email or text. Nicola was a joy, meeting us and bringing us to the house, showing us around and making a fuss of us when we visited the restaurant he works in nearby. We only spent a day or two travelling around as we became so relaxed in our little oasis of peace. We have promised ourselves a return visit to check out all the places listed in the local guidebook. Irsina is such a well kept secret - an amazing little place really. We would certainly recommend it to friends who, like ourselves, want some down-time in perfect surroundings.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sandy and Jill. We are so pleased you enjoyed your holiday and look forward to a return visit. There are even more places to see and things to do now as we have added to our local guidebook - but we know it can be difficult to take time out from relaxing to check them out!

The location of the villa is stunning more importantly the views from the balcony are out of this world and not to be tired of. When we were there we had problems with road work hence 3 star. However the owners compensated us and have put in place a few suggestions we made a very positive reaction to feed back. I would recomend this villa it is comfortable and well equiped, particularly the kitchen. It is ideal for a couple. Irisina is lovely with many places to see in and round the area. The coast is an easy drive as are most places. Local restaurants were limited due to the time of year and we ate in Contessa a few times but unfortunatly not the best. Good for Pasta and Pizza with wine and beer. The full menu was a bit of a challenge for them. The bar near the house is great for a campari soda beer etc and very reasonable costs. In fact very reasonable everywhere we went.

Obviously a car is needed and understand detailed instruction on how to get to the villa now included. We arrived on the late Bari flight and had to be rescued by their Italian contact. It is very simple to find and a quick look on google earth gives you a good idea of the countryside.

I would not recomend this villa for young families lots of glass to make you nervous. I think it will improve with time as the owners are very pleasant and did all they could to make the villa a good holiday experience. They also took on board any suggestions and you cant ask more than that.

Owner's Response: We were very sorry to learn there were roadworks underway when our Experienced Travellers were staying.

Thankfully these are now complete and the tarmac has been replaced with traditional flagstones more in keeping with the old town.
