La Fragolina - two visits in 2007 !

After visiting La Fragolina in May last year, we knew that we would be back ! It was our first taste of Tuscany, and what a memorable one - the house is sitated in a very quiet location, with great views. The courtyard was enchanting, and the special touches ( barbeque, planted herbs and comfortable loungers ), provided a welcome extension to the accommodation. We visited firstly in May, and achieved a long held ambition to visit the Uffizi Gallery. The journey to Florence by train was a fairly long one, but on our subsequent visit, in October, driving to Pisa and then catching the bus made for an easier trip. A closer place of historical interest is Lucca, which can be reached by catching a train from the nearby station. Try cycling around the city walls ! Within the house, everything was available to ensure a comfortable and carefree stay, even down to hats, shopping baskets and sticking plasters ! The owners had carefully considered all needs, and when we returned in October, the efficient woodburner was perfect for the more chilly evenings. The house was clean and welcoming, with comprehensive information readily available on all aspects of the locality, and comments in the visitor's book clearly endorsed the comments in this review. The description of the property was clear and precise, and the owners took pains to ensure that we would have a holiday to remember.
La Fragolina provides the perfect getaway, if you are looking for a peaceful but not too isolated holiday home. The local town of Fivizzano can be accessed by foot, and a short drive from Pognana, leads to spectacular mountain scenery and hidden away eating places. Without hesitation, we would recommend this property to friends, and, indeed, have already booked our 2008 slot at La Fragolina !

Me, my husband and our six year old daughter spent a week in june at the Fragolina. The house is modern, yet cosy, cool even though the weather is hot, and exceptionally free from bugs/insects of any kind. It is a quiet place with a beautiful view over the village and mountains. The house is excellent for either just staying at home relaxing on the terrace or as a base for doing excursions and sight seeings. We didn't go bathing in the river but went to the beaches of Lerici. Perfect! You really need a car, though! The owners are wonderful people who helped us with what ever we needed and made the stay perfect.
This is a place I sincerly recommend!

Upon arrival we were greeted with warm hospitality which continued throughout our stay. The house is/was fully equipped meeting all of our needs for a comfortable week-long stay. The owners enhanced our stay by proving to be always very helpful and also as wonderful company when opportunities allowed. The house contains a binder full of tips for a broad range of outings and adventures - ideal for the foodies to the fitness fanatics. With such a wonderful terrace and pergola we were often compelled to enjoy the splendors of the property itself. The village, the locals and the view are magnificent.

Our 14 month old son had a wonderful time in the enclosed terrace area. A small child's pool and a number of toys were made available for him to play with while his parents prepared meals from all of the local goodness.
We recommend this property wholeheartedly. It is suitably located to enjoy a number of attractions both local and in a greater radius. We hope very much to return again.

We stayed at this property with another couple . The owners provided a property of a very high standard with lots of extras & we felt at home instantly. Property is in a quiet location in the tiny village of Pognana. The locals were very friendly & the views across the surrounding countryside were magnificent. The courtyard with its ambience was a delight. Great location for doing walks & drives to surrounding villages & for getting to the Cinque Terra. Train trips were easily accessible. We enjoyed our stay. Can recommend.

We have stayed at La Fragolina for the last 2 years and have already booked for another 2 weeks this Summer. If you are looking for the real Tuscany, without the hordes of tourists, then this place is for you. Nestled in the hills above the beautiful town of Fivizzano, yet within easy reach of the mountains and the coast, it is the perfect place for a holiday. The town has everything you could need (supermarkets, butchers, bakers, bars, restaurants etc) and is a wonderful place to sit with a cappuccino watching the fountain in the piazza.

Days can be spent walking locally, driving up into the mountains for excellent lunches, swimming in the nearby waterfall or driving the 40 minutes or so to the Ligurian coastal resorts of Portovenere and Lerici or on to the Cinque Terre.

The food of this area is both excellent and very reasonably priced and there are numerous, small places to eat whilst out and about. The local people are very warm and friendly and will always try to communicate with you even though many do not speak English.

The house itself has everything you need for a comfortable stay; a real home from home. The rooms are light and airy and the kitchen is well equipped (if you are as inspired as we are with the local produce and want to cook authentic meals). The terrace is a fantastic area to sit with a glass of wine, dare I say, drinking in the spectacular views! There are loungers to sunbathe on, a barbecue and a large table under the vine-clad pergola for outdoor eating. Perfect to sit and watch the sun go down and, if you're lucky, for the fireflies to appear.

Actually, after writing this, can't wait until June when we can relive it all again!

Ideal Place for a Relaxing and Enjoyable Holiday.

We found the property charming in every way, full of character, in a beautiful location, with outstanding views of the mountains and forests from its sunny terrace, glorious sunsets and starlit nights. On the edge of an unspoilt and quiet village, the house is very comfortably furnished, well equipped and spotlessly kept.

There were delightful walks from the cottage, and more demanding walking is no great distance way. Clear pools in the nearby river for bathing, and sandy beaches forty minutes away.

We enjoyed the wide variety of excellent restaurants and bars, all within a short drive. Pisa, Lucca and coastal resorts within an hour or so. All provisions you need are in the nearby town.

We certainly recommend the cottage and hope to return in the near future.

I’ve stayed at La Fragolina a few times and can’t recommend it enough. The house is in a fantastic situation nestled in the mountains above the small medieval town of Fivizzano. If you want a quiet adventure far from the bustle of the usual tourist haunts then this is really it. The locals in the village are incredibly friendly, and love to meet visitors.

The terrace offers amazing views down to the town, and of the surrounding mountains - great for watching the sunset during an alfresco evening meal, or even just to relax and take in the view. For the best coffee / ice cream / pizza, Fivizzano is about a 15 minute walk downhill (getting back may take a little longer!).

The house itself has is always very clean and welcoming, and has everything you’ll need during your stay, including a well equipped kitchen. The kitchen/living room is open plan and has modern appliances, which somehow fit very well with the ancient looking walls and beams.

The information provided in the house tells you all you need to know about the surrounding area, and how to get further afield if you fancy a trip to nearby cities such as Parma and Lucca, as well as the coast (about 40 mins away by car) and the famous Cinque Terre.

The restaurants recommended in the guide written by the owners are really worthwhile visiting. Most of them are humble little family affairs, some of which barely even look like restaurants. The cooking is very simple, traditional and seasonal, but would rival some of the best restaurants in the UK (at a fraction of the price). If you’re into food, you won’t be disappointed. ! There’s info on where to pick up the best local wines too!

The guide also gives lots of suggestions for walks and other things to do in the area - there are some beautiful natural pools a short walk from the house which are fed by mountain water – perfect for a (very) refreshing swim on a hot day.

I can’t think of any bad points about La Fragolina – I’ve had a wonderful and relaxing time there with each visit.
