Rochefort, located on the banks of the River Charente, is a hugely popular health and spa resort. The long naval history of Rochefort can be seen in the old military arsenal and the 18th century frigate which stands in the port. The Old School of Naval Medicine is an absolutely magnificent place to visit, although it could make some visitors pretty queasy! Royan, having been largely flattened during the Allied bombing raids of WW II is slightly short of historical attractions, but what it lacks in heritage, it easily makes up for in beaches.
