Axarquia, Malaga Province (Costa del Sol) - Beautiful Axarquia
Axarqia, a unique region east of Malaga, bordered by mountains, lakes and the glorious beaches of the Mediterranean Sea.. An unspoilt area within Andalucia, rich in history and culture, full of contrasts and delights to discover and explore. In winter snow-capped mountain ranges are reflected in the aquamarine waters of Lake Vinuela, before they sweep down to the beaches and towns of the Costa del Sol, but with 320 days of sunshine a year, said to be the best climate in Europe, there’s plenty to do whatever the season!
Enjoy a tapas, try wine made from the famous local Moscatel grape, whilst strolling through the typical Andalucian white villages. These pueblos, precariously perched on mountaintops and hillsides, are one of the many legacies left by the Moors. See the prehistoric remains in the amazing caves near Nerja. Visit the hot springs at Perriana. Enjoy a paella cooked in giant pans, or barbecued sardines, a speciality of this area, in one of the numerous chirinquitos, (beach bars), whilst watching the sun set over the sea. Our favourite restaurant has breath taking views, overlooking the aquamarine waters of Lake Vinuela, with Mount Maroma and the Sierra Tejeda providing a dramatic back drop. At night, the rippling reflections of the moon as it passes over the lake, add a lovely romantic touch!
Sporting activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, boat trips/dolphin watching, sailing, jet skiing, fishing, rock climbing, quad biking, mountain biking, go-karting, horse riding, golf, water park, ten pin bowling. The dramatic and varied terrain of mountains, hills, gorges, caves, lakes, rivers and waterfalls provides wonderful walking for all levels. In winter go skiing or tobogganing at Sierra Nevada, near Granada, just 2 hours away.
Explore the many beaches ranging from delightful little coves, ideal for snorkeling, hunting in rock pools, and without the usual commercialism, to just relaxing soaking up the sun on the miles of beaches along the coast, or enjoy a day trip to one of the many historic cities in the area, including Sevilla, Cordoba, Ronda, Málaga Gibraltar and Granada with the famous Alhambra Palace. Antequera and nearby El Torcal with its indredible, unique rock formations, the most beautiful karstic phenomenon in Europe.
Join in the fun at one of the many colourful fiestas held in all the villages and towns throughout the year, or simply relax and marvel at the stunning sunsets and incredible vistas that this unique area offers.
Axarquia has something for everyone!
