The town’s origins are clearly roman, although there are strong Moorish influences too. The old town holds a great number of historic and architectural treasures, the most impressive of which is the 15th century Iglesia de la Trinidad. Any sightseeing tour of Sanlucar de Barrameda must start in the delightful main square, the Plaza del Cabildo, a timeless square which stands in the cool shadows of palm trees, filled with excellent little bars and restaurants, which spill their happy customers out onto the pavement. The town is littered with gorgeous little churches, and the Museo del Mar Las Caracolas is a fantastic place to visit, with its displays of all things marine. Of course, being on the edge of the Sherry Triangle, there is a fantastic sherry firm within the town, and the firm arranges weekly tours every Thursday.

The Donana National Park lies just across the Estuary from a Sanlucar de Barrameda property, encompassing a beautiful region of dunes, beaches, wetlands and pine forests, home to a huge number of bird species including the Spanish imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx. You can take a boat across to the park, which drops you off at the start of one of the most extensive walking trails in the park.

Visitors have access to many kilometres of deserted, sandy beaches from a holiday rental in Sanlucar de Barrameda, especially to the south west of the town, where fine sands line the estuary. The sea is some 20 minutes away by car, where the beaches of Jerez attract visitors from around Andalucia. There are some fantastic festivals in Sanlucar de Barrameda, especially the thrilling horse racing events hosted on the beaches of the Guadalquivir Estuary. Taking place on the 2nd and 4th weekends of each month, the races are a complete event, with huge, baying crowds, bookies and millions of Euro’s worth of prize money on offer. The Ferie de la Manzanilla is a wonderful festival in the town during early June, and there are a whole host of jazz, flamenco and classical festivals to enjoy from a Sanlucar de Barrameda villa.

The town of Chiclana de la Frontera is a stunning Andalucian town which glistens in the sunshine. Chiclana is set in a fantastically natural area, where pine forests stretch down to meet the sea. The town is well worth exploring if you have an interest in traditional Spanish life, from flamenco dancing to bullfighting, Spanish wines to traditional architecture.
