Named after St. Irene, Santorini is one of the most famous Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea. Created by a volcanic eruption, this crescent shaped island has charming white-washed villages perched on the cliffs with magnificent sea views. The volcanic sands are black and red and while some beaches can be quiet and unspoilt, others are fully equipped with sunbeds and aqua sports. Things to do in Santorini, Greece
There are many ways to get around this steep island but perhaps the best views can be seen from the cable cars.
Take a step back in time and ride a donkey – the oldest and still the best way to get around without harming the ozone!
The best known beach on Santorini is Perissa. Well organized with sunbeds and shady parasols there are a number of beach bars, restaurants and water sports activities here.
Take a half day trip on an old sailing boat to the foot of the lava flow ‘Nea Kameni’ where guests can climb to the top of the volcano. The boat then sails on to ‘Palea Kameni’ where swimming in the hot springs is great fun.
Places to visit in Santorini, Greece
Spend the day on the nearby island of Thirassia where you can eat, swim and explore the traditional Greek village of Manola, a pretty cluster of white houses which gives a glimpse of life as it used to be. The other Cyclades, including Andros, Mykanos and Paros also make excellent day trip destinations.
Visit the picturesque village of Oia by riding up the 250 steps on a donkey. Pronounced ‘Ia’ it is famous as the most beautiful village on Santorini and it captures the quiet local life here. It is also known for its fantastic sunsets.
A short distance from your self catering villa is Fira, the capital of Santorini. It is on the edge of the cliff 260 metres above sea level, so don’t step too close to the edge! The local white houses have blue painted windows and doors along the narrow cobbled streets. Blue domed churches are interspersed with shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. There is an interesting Megaron Gyzi Museum which shows the history of Fira before and after the 1956 earthquake.
