Things to do in Sarlat, France

The old town of Sarlat makes for exceptional viewing. The yellow sandstone buildings, of both medieval and renaissance origin, glisten in the sun, leaving the whole town gleaming from sunrise to sunset. The Cathedral and the surrounding streets are among the finest spots in Sarlat to explore, filled with wonderfully attractive buildings, and although there are no major sites of international acclaim, the whole town is more beautiful than you can imagine before you arrive. The Sarlat tourist information office has excellent sightseeing routes to follow. Every Saturday, the atmosphere in the village becomes even more vibrant as the Sarlat market comes to town.

Sarlat, France, is located just 10km from the Dordogne River. The banks of the Dordogne are wonderful to walk along, and if you would really like to relax as you travel along the river, with canoe and kayak centres offering canoe hire along the course of the river. There are many fantastically peaceful spots along the river to stop and have a break, a picnic or a refreshing swim, and the scenery is truly spectacular, especially as some of the most impressive chateau in Perigord Noir are located along the banks of the River Dordogne.

The Dordogne is also known as an fantastic golfing destination, and there are some fantastic golf courses to choose from when staying in a Sarlat apartment. The Gulf Du Domaine de Rochebois golf course lies just outside the town, offering visitors 18 holes of excellent golf in beautiful surroundings.

Places to visit on holiday in Sarlat, France

The town of Domme is a fantastic place to visit from Sarlat. Not only is it filled with beautiful buildings dating back to the 13th century, but the weekly markets is a fantastic place to pick up truffle, fois gras, wines and other local delicacies including pastries. The walks along the limestone plateau on which Domme stands are wonderful, with fantastic views out over the countryside.

Sarlat enjoys a fantastically mild climate, although July and August can become very hot. July and August see daily peak temperatures of over 30˚C on an a daily basis. Even during the winter months, temperatures remain above 10˚C during the day, perfectly warm enough for sightseeing tours of Sarlat.

The closest airports to a holiday rental in Sarlat are Bordeaux (BOD) and Toulouse (TLS), both of which receive direct flights from the UK on a regular basis. Flights from Birmingham (BHX), Manchester (MAN) and London are the most popular, although you can catch flights from a great range of British airports. Taking a hire car is recommended for Sarlat holidays, as it opens up the whole of the Dordogne for exploration.
