Sarteano has a number of historical landmarks and monuments worth visiting. You can take your pick from the Chiesa (Churches) of San Martino and San Francesco, the Palazzo Comunale (Municipal Palace), the castle Castiglioncello del Trinoro, the Palazzo Piccolomini (Piccolomini Palace) and the Museo Civico Archeologico (Archaeological Civic Museum).
There are also a number of wineries, patio restaurants, bars and cafes within the historical centre, giving you plenty of choice when you want to relax after a long day, as well as a number of grocery stores selling fresh local produce, allowing you to rustle up an authentic Tuscan meal in your self-catering accommodation.
The area is also famous for its thermal waters – known as ‘Bagno Santo’ (Holy Bath), which are believed to have therapeutic properties. The springs are in a park, just a short walk from the town centre, and are also used to fill an outdoor swimming pool.
Sarteano’s biggest event is held every August, when thousands of visitors come from all around for the Giostra del Saracino – a historical procession and horseback contest. Book early if you plan to arrive at this time.

Sarteano is a great location from which to enjoy a series of day trips whilst holidaying in the area. The beautifully restored Abbazia (Abbey) of Spineto is just a 10 minute drive away – or a glorious half hour walk if you prefer. Neighbouring Cetona (6km) is just one of many examples of well-preserved medieval towns that lie off the regular tourist route. Also within around an hour’s drive of Sarteano are the spectacular cities of Siena and Florence.

Most people are aware of the glorious Tuscan climate, and Sarteano is no different. From May until September the temperature rarely drops below 22C, with hours of sunshine and low rainfall.
