There are three natural beaches and three artificial beaches at Playa de las Americas, all covered in black volcanic sand, where sunbathing, volleyball or games of frisbee can be played. There are also ample provisions for jet skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving. Further out to sea, you can take a boat excursion to see whales and dolphins or to take advantage of the magnificent deep sea for blue marlin, yellow fin tuna, mako and hammerhead sharks.

Another popular activity on a Playa de las Americas holiday is to climb Mount Teide, the volcano in the centre of Tenerife. If the climb sounds too strenuous for a holiday activity, you do not have to miss the dramatic views as there is a cable car which can drop you off 200m from the summit.

For shopping, Playa de las Americas has a huge range of duty-free shops, especially electricals and you can pick up some real bargains. The Torviscas Market on a Thursday and Saturday is a haggler’s paradise, and Playa de las Americas is only an hour from the famous clothes shops of Santa Cruz.
