If the thought of staying in the extremely busy and hedonistic resort of Malia (11km away) is your worst nightmare, then Milatos may just be your ideal holiday rental destination. A traditional Greek village and fishing harbour, Milatos is quiet, relaxing, and largely tourist-free.

There is a pebble beach and a short sandy stretch near the harbour, and as well as relaxing it is possible to enjoy a spot of fishing or swimming here, as you watch the fisherman go about bringing in the days catch.

The main draw of Milatos is the restaurants. If you would like to sample some of the freshest and tastiest fish on the island, then this is the place to come. Most of the traditional seafood tavernas are located around the harbour, and an outside table will be rewarded with fine beautiful sea views.

For a unique experience head to Milatos Cave. This cave measures over 2,000sq metres and dates back to the Neolithic period. It is known locally as the sight of a battle between the local army and Turkish invaders in 1823, and is now something of a tourist attraction, housing a memorial and a small church. Make sure you take a torch though – it's pitch black in there!
