The location of Alte makes it a great base for exploring inland Portugal, with plenty of walking, cycling and horse riding opportunities around the hilly surrounds, offering great views out to the coast.

Beach lovers will also not be disappointed with a break in Alte, which despite benefiting from beautiful inland scenery is still less than a half-hour drive from Portugal’s stunning south coast. Several of the Algarve’s major resorts are found nearby, including Vilamoura, Quarteria and Albufeira.

Alte is also a popular destination for golf lovers, with several 18-hole golf courses all located only a short drive away from the village within a 20km radius.

There are also lots of fun-filled family days out which are possible from Alte. This includes Zoomarine, a cross between a zoo and a theme park which is 30km south of Alte, and Atlantic Park aquapark which is just a 20 minute drive from the town.

Although only a small town, Alte does have several of its own bars and restaurants, many of which are open late into the evening. Most of these serve up local wines, beers and of course port, as well as freshly prepared local fare such as pork with clams or cherry chicken.

Places to visit on holiday in Alte, Portugal

The small picture-postcard town of Loule is a 30-minute drive from Alte, and although much of the old town was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755, still captivates visitors with what remains. The town is home to a famous carnival in February, considered to be one of the best in Portugal, and the Gypsy markets on a Saturday well worth a look.

Summers are long and hot, with temperatures sitting above 20C for most of May to October. Although a little wetter in the winter months, temperatures remain mild, rarely dipping below 10C even in January.

Alte is easily reached via Faro Airport (FAO), just 30km north along the coast from the village. Faro airport receives numerous international flights daily, including several from the UK operated by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and several others.
