Olhao is still the local fishing village that it always was and you can still see the fisherman unloading their catch or mending their nets. There is also an excellent local market here every day which sells local fresh produce. In the evenings during the summer there is plenty of local entertainment along the seafront and a museum, cinema and plenty of local fish restaurants.

The ancient walled city of Faro is a delightful place to explore. Once a trading port, it has seen several invasions and has both Arab and Roman ruins. Make sure you visit the 13th century Cathedral in the square and the beautiful Episcopal Palace nearby. The golden church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo certainly lives up to its name with wonderful gold leaf woodwork.

During the summer there is entertainment near the marina, and just outside the town there is a shopping centre and multiplex cinema showing films in English.

The nearby village of Estoi has the remains of a Roman villa which enjoyed surprisingly modern home comforts for its time!
