With a population of just over 200 people, Juviles is one of the smallest and most peaceful villages in the Alpujarra district of southern Spain. It is located in one of the highest parts of the mountains, around 1200m above sea level, meaning some stunning views can be witnessed when walking around the village. The area is popular with walkers and hikers anxious to head into the hills and enjoy all of the benefits of nature, with a diverse range of flora and fauna waiting to be discovered.
Those who head to Juviles on a relaxing break will not be disappointed either. Amenities in the village are basic but adequate for self-caterers, with a few small shops and traditional tapas-bars. The bars also serve up great local dishes at more than reasonable prices. Juviles was once an agricultural area, and is known for its air-cured ham, so make every effort to try this speciality during your stay.
The liveliest time to visit Juviles is August, when the weather is warm and the annual fiesta swings into action. During this time of year much of the action in the village centres around the open-air swimming pool, which is open for the duration of the summer.

There are a number of other mountain villages to visit in the Sierra Nevada region, with the trio around the Rio Poqueira gorge; namely Bubion, Pampaneira and Capileira, three of the finest. The nearest village for a wider set of amenities is Berchules, 6km away. The beaches of the Costa Tropical can also be reached in under an hour, so with mountains on one side and the sea on the other, visitors to Juviles really are spoilt for choice.

Winter temperatures in Juviles are ideal for those heading into the nearby mountains to ski, with an average temperature of just below zero. Snowfall is heaviest between November and February, with the ski season usually running from December until late March. July and August are the warmest months in which to visit, with plenty on sunshine to be enjoyed.
