The village of Ugijar has remained loyal to its Spanish roots, and as a result offers tourists traditional attractions rather than modern ones. One of the highlights are the local tapas bars, where you can enjoy a selection of sharing plates or simply opt for the ‘Menu del Dia’. Either way, the prices are more than reasonable, and even the most seasoned of travellers are likely to be able to try something they have not tasted before.
The church is the main focal point in the village centre, with a number of narrow side-streets darting off around it. This is also where you will find the local market, which is something of a local favourite and a great place to pick up food supplies, clothes, leather goods and various other souvenirs. The stalls open up early in the morning, and you should allow at least two hours to peruse.
The Sierra Nevada National Park is also literally on the doorstep of Ugijar, and offers a wealth of both summer and winter activities. Whether you are into mountain biking, hiking, bird-watching, wildlife-spotting, horse-riding, skiing, or simply walking around and taking in the scenery, you are certain to be able to find something of interest to do, and to end up with plenty of scenic photograph opportunities.

The fringes of the Sierra Nevada National Park are scattered with small, rural villages like Ugijar, and an enjoyable and fulfilling vacation can be spent alternating between them and the National park itself. Alpujarra (18km) and Valor (8km) are two of the closest, and the best places to start your ‘village-hopping’ tour. Another option is to head to the big cities, such as Granada (100km north-west) and Almeria (80km south-east).

The region around Ugijar is renowned for its excellent air quality, clear skies and hours of sunshine. Winters are the perfect example of this, with near-zero temperatures but still hour upon hour of sun. The snow melts as the spring arrives, and the summer months can receive excellent temperatures of up to and over 30C.
Flights to Ugijar, Spain
The best way of getting to Ugijar from the UK is to fly to Almeria Airport (LEI), which is 99km from the village – a journey which will take around an hour and a half. An overnight stop-off in Almeria is strongly recommended, allowing you to enjoy the attractions of this historical city, before heading on to your holiday rental accommodation in Ugijar.
