The church is the main focal point in the village centre, with a number of narrow side-streets darting off around it. This is also where you will find the local market, which is something of a local favourite and a great place to pick up food supplies, clothes, leather goods and various other souvenirs. The stalls open up early in the morning, and you should allow at least two hours to peruse.

The Sierra Nevada National Park is also literally on the doorstep of Ugijar, and offers a wealth of both summer and winter activities. The fringes of the Sierra Nevada National Park are scattered with small, rural villages like Ugijar, and an enjoyable and fulfilling vacation can be spent alternating between them and the National park itself. Alpujarra (18km) and Valor (8km) are two of the closest, and the best places to start your ‘village-hopping’ tour. Another option is to head to the big cities, such as Granada (100km north-west) and Almeria (80km south-east).

The best way of getting to Ugijar from the UK is to fly to Almeria Airport (LEI), which is 99km from the village – a journey which will take around an hour and a half.
