The West Country has many delightful places for enjoying a holiday with plenty of interesting things to see and do in the area. Cheddar is a small town next to the incredibly steep Cheddar Gorge. Known for its cheese, the area has many attractions including local caves, tea shops and a 15th century church.

Bridgwater is about 18 miles to the southwest of Cheddar and is a larger town, situated on the River Parrett and close to the Mendip and Quantock Hills. It is historically significant for the Battle of Sedgemoor. Both places have many local shops and restaurants.

There are several golf courses near Cheddar and Bridgwater including the Cannington Golf Club and the Enmore Park Golf Club, all within 3 miles of Bridgwater.

This area of Somerset has many delightful towns and villages which all have their own country pubs. These delightful old inns are full of history and memorabilia of the local area decorating the walls. They also generally serve good food in all price ranges.

Walkers enjoy this lovely area with rolling hills and miles of maintained footpaths which are traffic-free. Copley Wood, the Cheddar Cliffs and the Mendip Hills are all local beauty spots which can be explored on foot.

Places to Visit Near Cheddar and Bridgwater Jacob’s Ladder

This steep climb known as Jacob’s Ladder runs from the bottom of Cheddar Gorge. It has 274 steps which end at the top of the cliff with magnificent views. Walkers must have a good head for heights!

Cheddar Caves

The dramatic Gough’s Cave and Cox’s Cave have many impressive stalactites and stalagmite formations. There is also an exhibition on Cheddar Man, a 9,000 year old skeleton.

Blake Museum

The interesting Blake Museum is in a restored house on Blake Street in Bridgwater, the original birthplace of Admiral Blake. The museum has many interesting artifacts including Blake’s old sea chest.
