The small market town of Morpeth is a great centre for exploring the area of Mid Northumberland. As well as the usual shops, banks and pubs there is a unique Bagpipe Museum, a Craft Centre and a freestanding clock tower with a bell. The River Wansbeck provides riverside walks and the area makes an ideal centre for walking, fishing and golf.
The Mid Northumberland area offers hundreds of walks amidst some beautiful natural scenery. Hadrian's Wall is within easy reach from your Morpeth and Mid Northumberland holiday home with interesting remains of the mile castles. Visitors can walk between Housesteads, Vondolanda and Steel Rigg experiencing the 2000 year old wall, defensive forts and the deep ditch.
FishingThe area offers all types of fishing including coarse and game fishing and trips can be arranged for sea fishing. There is something for everyone from beginner to expert.
Carlisle Park is in the centre of Morpeth and provides riverside footpaths, boating, tennis courts and a bowling green. The Turner Garden celebrates the life of botanist, William Turner, who was born and raised in the town.
This delightful National Trust property dates back to 1688 and is a fine family home to visit with collections of artworks, furniture and curiosities. There is a tranquil walled garden with colourful borders and a charming conservatory.
Out on the east coast of mid Northumberland is Druridge Bay which has a seven mile stretch of golden sand dunes. There is also a country park and a large lake with woods and meadows surrounding it.
BlanchlandDescribed as one of the prettiest villages in England, this idyllic neighbourhood is surrounded by scenic walking routes and the Derwent Reservoir. It has a 12th century pub, the Lord Crewe Arms, and a wealth of history from when it was the centre of the Jacobite Rebellions in 1715.
The area around mid Northumberland has cold winters with some snowfall, and cool summers. Average temperatures during the winter are 38-44F (3-7C) and in the summer they reach 67F (19C) on average. The area gets at least two inches of rainfall per month with drizzly showers at times.
Getting to your Morpeth and Mid Northumberland holiday cottage is quite straightforward. The nearest airport is Newcastle-upon-Tyne Airport and a hire car can then be used to explore the area or use the AD122 Hadrian's Wall Bus to get around.
There is also a good 3-hour train service from London King's Cross to the stations at Newcastle and Morpeth. For those travelling to the area by car, the M1 (A1) runs from London to Edinburgh via Newcastle and the M6 runs from Birmingham to Carlisle with connections along the A69 and A66, making the area very accessible for motorists.
