Discovering Tavistocks’s many areas is best enjoyed with a relaxing walk. Several paths offer anything from walking through an 1880’s viaduct to former locations of historical significance, or through the wooded areas of Dartmoor Forest. Equal opportunities are available for golfing and fishing. Fly fishing is readily accessible within the community of Tavistock. Cycling on route 27 is a much loved pastime, in the community, and allows the rider a scenic tour following a path directly through the beautiful town.

A prominent arts scene is enjoyed by this community. Tavistock Wharf is home to various productions of great variety including drama, musical productions, concerts, and films. Other pastimes in the community include a market which is known as the premier pannier market in the area, dating back to its first charter in the 12th century. This is known as the premier pannier market in the region. Each weekday includes different items with anything from antiques to produce. Several restaurants and cafes are charming. Historical buildings which date back centuries sit amongst the area's cobblestone pavements. All buildings are architecturally beautiful and Tavistock’s remaining Victorian architecture capturesthe imagination of those who pass through the town. Most famous are the ruins of a Christian monastery which include walls from the gateway, porch, and a hall. Its construction dates back to around 960, and the building was later demolished by Henry VIII. Ruins are located on the communities square which are the location of several historical places like a 15th century church, the parish church of St. Eustachius. Tavistock’s town hall is known as one of the most aesthetically pleasing of the many buildings on the square with beautiful vaulted ceilings and the capacity to seat several hundred people.

In addition to areas of interest within the town square itself, Cotehele House is located just outside. The house dates back to the 1400’s, and is well worth investigating from any Tavistock accommdodation. A museum and beautiful gardens provide a pleasing atmosphere for taking in the historical grounds.

There is also a beautiful country park next to the canal, which offers a wonderful location for a picnic or to use the playground equipment. Other outdoor leisure areas include a local trout farm which allows visitors to fish on its ponds which are located on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. This pristine park is deserving of attention from visitors with its unique species of animal and plant life, amongst archaeological ruins.

This area is known for wind and rain however enjoys more sunny days than areas in northern regions of the UK. Summer months have hotter weather given the areas inland location, as well as more sunny days than the typically rainy winter months.

Flights to Tavistock, Devon

Exeter airport (EXT) is the closest airport to Tavistock accommodation, and is well served from across England by Air Southwest. Having the use of a hire car whilst staying in a self catering Tavistock holiday cottage is highly recommended. There are also good rail links from most of the country, including London.
