Although many of the town’s most important historical remains were destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, the impressive sandstone Silves Castle remained strong, due to the huge Moorish walls which support it. Silves Castle is the largest castle in the Algarve, and is certainly among the most beautiful. The Museu Arqueologico has managed to collate and display various artefacts from throughout the town’s history, and pieced them together for visitors to get a clearer understanding of Silves’ history and influence. The Roman Ponte Romana and 13th Century Cathedral also make for interesting viewing if you have the time whilst staying in a Silves property.

Despite a huge amount being made out of Silves’ ancient heritage, there is much more to taking accommodation in Silves than touring historical sites.
