The great range of historical monuments in the Sitia region, which date from throughout the ages, are explained and explored wonderfully well in the Archaeological Museum of Sitia, which is a fantastic place to start your historical explorations of the region. The museum is home to many extraordinary artefacts from across eastern Crete, but will so many places to explore, you can’t restrict your historical tour to the museum alone. The Roman fish tanks, Hellenic docks on the Tripitos Peninsula and ancient sacrificial sites of Sitia are certainly worth exploration.

Sitia really comes to life in the evenings, especially around the old port. There is a fantastic atmosphere during the evenings, especially as the locals love to dress up in the evenings before heading down to the beach bars that surround the port. Although tourism does thrive in Sitia, Crete, the majority of restaurants, bars and shops are aimed at the locals, perfect for those wishing to truly explore local lifestyles and cultures. The restaurants of Sitia are awash with local delicacies, especially olives, oils and wines. Those wishing to really explore the culinary joys of the region should head to a Sitia property at the end of August, when the Sultana Festival brings the whole town to its knees with plentiful wine and constant dancing.

Temperatures regularly reach into the low 30’s (˚C) during the summer months, but thankfully for those of us who prefer temperatures hot but not scorching, summer conditions rarely soar much further. The evenings remain wonderfully balmy, perfect for long evening strolls along the beach or having a meal and glass of local wine out on the balcony of your self catering Sitia apartment, watching the sun disappear over the watery horizon.

Cheap flights to Sitia, Crete

The tiny Sitia Airport (JSH) is an important transport hub in Crete, Greece. Sitia Airport unfortunately doesn’t receive direct flights from the UK, but it is well connected with other Greek airports including Athens (ATH), which makes reaching a Sitia property really easy. There are also regular ferry services from Athens’ Pireaus Port.
